A straight answer please
Culebra, Puerto Rico

My girlfriend and I are heading to PR March 11-19 and are excited by the idea of camping at Flamenco Beach. It would be a great help to us if the locals or travelers who have been there recently would give us straight answers to a few questions.

1. Is it still $20/night to camp near Flamenco Beach?
2. If we didn't want to take the transit into town for groceries, can we eat at food stalls for $20/day each?
3. How many crimes have been committed against Flemenco Beach campers in the last year that you know of?
4. Is there still a reliable ferry system to Culebra from SJ?
5. Are there any places on Culebra that sell tents and other basic camping gear if we choose not to fly with our stuff?

My girlfriend and I lived in Cambodia for 3 years and travelled many times to the remote beaches of SE Asia, so we feel that Flamenco is a good fit for us. We know the value of getting info from locals and have helped out a number of travellers during our time in Cambodia and hope that there will be a few Culebra locals who are willing to give us a heads up on how to make our trip enjoyable and, most importantly, safe. Any key info that I have not covered above would also be appreciated. Thanks.

The answer to #4 is "No". The ferry is not running from SJ to Culebra.

1. camping last I heard was still 20 a night.
2. You can get food at the beach, I don't know about a breakfast or dinner offerings, but you could always stock up on a couple things from the grocery stores and supplement with beach food.
3. Don't leave expensive equipment or cash laying around and don't be rude to people. If you come off as a stuck up tourist, I think people are less likely to appreciate your presence. Culebra is small, and if your gonna be around for a couple weeks, people will start to recognize you, make a good impression.
4. Ferry from Fajardo to Culebra runs daily, you can take publicos from San Juan to Fajardo for under 10 bucks, ask for 'el terminal de publicos' or get a taxi for 50 bucks.
5. There is a camping supply tent at the beach, I think they rent tents. You can also find supplies at grocery stores and hardware stores.

You can rent a scooter from Culebra Scooters, for a day or two just to get around and stock up on 'stuff' and see beaches on the other side of the island!
Have fun!!

that goes for even just a few days really...

and it's worked for me everywhere, even Paris.

but I guess (sadly) it has to be said.

Thanks to everyone for the info. I really appreciate the forum and those who contibute to it. It will be very hard to not see hockey for that time, but I get the feeling that my experiences on Culebra and the kindness of the people living there are going to help ease the suffering. Go Leafs!

I was just in Culebra last weekend and most of the people camping were young American teenagers and young married couples. They stated that the cost was $20.00 per day. You can get breakfast (coffee and pastries) at the kiosks located at the entrance to the beach. I was spending about $5.00 to $6.00 per day for lunch which included a full plate of rice and beans chicken shiskebabs which Puertoriquenos call Pinchos De Pollo and a side order usually Tostones (fried Plantains) and a diet coke. There is no ferry service from San Juan but there is a ferry leaving daily from Fajardo which is on the east coast of the island. There's a kiosk at the beach entrance where you can rent tents. The people I spoke to from the campsite stated that the locals that were camping out were very friendly and even shared their meals with them. Just be courteous to everyone (say buenos dias in the morning and buenas noches at night and always say gracias for any favor whether big or small.

My husband and I are going to PR in May and we are looking forward to camping on Flamenco beach. I have never camped out before. Do you have to be an expert? Are there people around who usually help?

I heard that you can get to Culebra from San Juan thru a short helicopter ride, is that true and if so how much?
How much is it to rent camping gear.? What tools and supplies do they have available to rent.

check under "transport" on this and other sites - a plane ride (not helicopter) runs between generally $100 - to $130 rt.

while I'm sure you could charter a helicopter, it would be insanely expensive.

can't answer the rental gear questions, but that's been addressed somewhere around here.

expert?

it ain't rocket science. but let me put it this way, compared to being 3 days from the nearest outpost in the New Mexico Rockies with no fresh water, bears, digging ones own latrine and near freezing overnight temperatures, it's the Plaza Hotel.

helpful?

most people there are very friendly and out-going
