Reservation for the campground
Culebra, Puerto Rico

We are planning on camping at Playa Flamenco campground from nov.29 til dec 18. Is it necessary to make a reservation? I tried calling the phone numbers listed in this website but can't get a hold of anyone. Also, is it possible to rent bicycles for longer periods? like 2-3 weeks? or is it better to bring our own bikes (we are a family with 2 kids ages 8 and 11). Any other advices for camping and travelling on a budget on Culebra? Thank you!

Wow....3 weeks in heaven. Dick and Cathie rent bikes but I do not know if they have kids bikes. At $17 per day for an adult bike, it would make more sense to rent one of his Volkswagon Things for your trip. But if you are set on bikes, it almost sounds reasonable to buy at WalMart and buy a cheap set of basic tools and an air pump. When you are ready to leave....give them to a charity on the island. Everyone wins.

I did the Walmart route in Culebra several years ago for the same reasons, too expensive to rent for an extended period. I posted my experience on the Forum. I would not recommend bikes from Walmart. They were so bad that my wife walked her bike up hill (gears didn't shift well) and down hill (brakes didn't work well). BTW I can do my own bike repairs and I still had trouble keeping them running reasonably well.

Arroz, I think I remember that post. It did not sound very appealing. Keeping that in mind and the additional fact that there are children involved, I would think single speed simple bikes are the "bike-de-jour". My thinking is this...the kids will do a lot of walking up the hills and one would want to walk the hills with the kids rather than leaving them behind. So keep it simple, stay away from the gear shifting problem and hard worn out break pads. Go basic.

Still, I would price Dick and Cathie for a VW Thing, they are cheap and in the long run make for a less complicated vacation.

BTW, I have not been to Culebra in December, we are going in January and reservations are never required then, so someone else will have to chime in on your timing and the need for reservations.
