Clothes
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi everyone.

I'm going to be camping on Flamenco starting October 9. What clothes do you typically need at that time of year? I guess it's obvious that it's very hot during the day, but are folks wearing long pants at night? Trying to pack light...

Thanks!

clothes? huh. that's prob. where I've gone wrong. (thumbs up to Dewey Bail-Bond!)

If SJ is a stop along the way or back, maybe some long pants. otherwise don't worry (just don't scare the children). and wear a shirt in town. maybe a very light windbreaker at most.

but that rule seems to work anywhere.

I'm with Richard on this. I never wear any clothes on Culebra. Well, if it's chilly, I'll wear a t-shirt. But that's where I draw the line.

Seriously, temperatures (both air and water) vary little during the year. Check weather.com for average highs and lows. It's warm year round.

But you will definitely want a pair (or two) of light pants in the evenings to prevent bug bites. We learned that lesson the hard way.

And bring a long sleeved t-shirt just in case there's a "cold snap" and it goes down to 65 during the night. LOL.

Don't bother with sleeping bags, in my opinion. A flannel sheet is more than enough.

Thanks, guys - that is helpful.

Of course, I'll let my girlfriend know that the experts say that clothes are "optional".

the "optional" option can result in certain awkward and expensive consequences - your call.

if you need more than a duffle/jump bag for a week, you've packed too much. (camping gear not included)

Hey, I'll be arriving at the campground also on Oct 9 with my girlfriend. We'll probably run into each other. How long are you staying? We'll be there 1 week. Also, I'm bringing a water-filter to hook onto the fawcet to produce drinking water. If it works, you're welcome to have filtered water.

My concern is the mosquitos, due to all the rain they've just received (over 8-inches in 3 days!). In approximately 2 weeks, all those mosquito eggs now hatching shall be ready to do their thing... ug (I hope not). Therefore, at night I would highly recommend covering as much skin as possible. You will not need anything heavy, just a real light-weight, long sleeve shirt and long pants. Feet should also be covered at this time of day. I hope I'm wrong about the mosquitos--but I think it would be a mistake not to come prepared.

Also, bring good sleeping pads or inflatable matresses, unless you enjoy sleeping on packed sand that's almost as hard as pavement. The low temperature at night should not go below 65°F, so don't bring heavy sleeping bags!

Hope to see you there!

Detlef

Actually we'll arrive at Flamenco on Friday, Oct 10, hopefully around noon.

You're not wrong about the mosquitos. They are out for our blood and yours too. But with repellent (under those lightweight clothes) and coils for camping, you should be fine.
You can bring long sleeved shirts and pants and still go light. I just went away for a month. One back pack, one small bag, two climates. Done (secret: stuff I bought, I mailed back to myself)

Save What's Left!
