campground questions
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I'm coming to Culebra with my husband and 2 other couples in March and just had a few questions about the Flamenco campground. We're only taking carry on's for the plane, so the less I pack the better.

First of all...are there good trees for hanging a hammock?...I don't want to pack one if it will just be a waste.

Could I just sleep in my hammock?

What about mosquito's...or other bugs?

If I'm sleeping in my tent, would it be too hot in a sleeping bag, or a better way to put that...is a small blanket enough for the night?

How hard is the ground...and if it's really hard, where can I buy a cheap floaty?

Thanks! I've found this forum so helpful.

Another question I have:

I heard the campground is $10 a night for up to 6 people. I've also heard it's $10 per tent. Does anyone know which it is?

I just returned after camping Flamenco for 3 weeks with friends. There were great trees on which I hung my Yucatan string hammock and I wanted to sleep in it but I'd not slept in it since 1981. Then came the 'night sounds' and I lacked a sleeping bag (it got chilly outside on most nights, I had packed only a small fleece throw). There were also showers, some bugs and although my hammock was under a tarp, I got wet and usually gave in at 1 am and went into my tent. Several nights in the tent I was chilly ( one person in a 2 person tent) even with the fleece and fitted sheet on and over a full-length thermarest pad; several nights I put on long-sleeved outerwear to stay warm and some nights it was too hot for even a night shirt. The ground is sand; it is hard. Some folks bought a floaty in Fajardo at Wal-Mart. They can be rented from a kiosk at the campground parking lot too. I was grateful to borrow a nice floaty for a week to put under the thermarest and then traded up to an egg-crate mattress topper from a friend who was leaving. Overall, the natural setting, colors and people are superb, the wildlife and sound is unbelievable. I miss the white noise of the pounding surf.

mmm. white noise.

in DC that means helicopters....

mosquitos and no-seeums: def. plan on picking up some DEET at a grocery store when you get there's really but no need to pack that.

as far as packing for the plane goes, remember it's mostly limited by weight. and anyway once a family had too much luggage size-wise, and the airline (Nena?) just sent the rest on the next flight.

it can get chilly at night (relative term in February, I know) but I think a full-on sleeping bag might be a bit much, maybe sweats and a light blanket or flannel sheet could suffice for most. layer it up!

Based on my experience, a Senior adult pays $10 per night per tent.

yes, per night, per tent.

remember to set your tent up under some shade because it gets really hot midday!
the ground is hard but unless you prefer soft, DH & I were fine with it (we've tented on top of a concrete roof...)

you will definitely need to bring some deet for the skeeters and no-see-ums!
when we camped out there last march, it was chilly at night but DH and I had our sleeping bags (lined with flannel), silk liners, long-sleeve shirts and long pants. It was fine and the sounds of the ocean just a few feet away are hypnotic.

Thanks guys! I called the campground and they told me it is $20 per tent. Did they change that recently because everyone else has told me $10? $20 seems very expensive for just one tent.
