Dealing with Mosquitoes in March?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I'm trying to plan a March trip to Puerto Rico and Culebra for myself, my wife and our two boys, ages 5 and 8. I would be grateful for any advice, especially regarding the following questions:

- How are the mosquitoes during the daytime and evening on Culebra in mid-late March? We've lived in places like rural Wisconsin and Alabama, so we're accustomed to some mosquitoes, but I would like to have a realistic idea to help me with thinking about how we would approach the day's activities (unfortunately, with a 5 and 8 year old, laying around all day won't suffice, although I wouldn't mind). Also, my younger son's skin tends to react pretty badly to the bites - a few are okay, but if he gets covered with them it can be a problem.

- I noticed from pictures that the forest and/or brush often grows quite close to the water's edge - are there typically mosquitoes during the day on the beach? How's the main town in the evenings, say for going in for dinner?

As I said, we've dealt with mosquitoes before, but I'd like some information with which to prepare properly.

Thanks very much for your consideration. Best wishes to all.

Dear friend:
It this is your first time to Culebra Island, bring plenty of mosquito repelent for the whole family. Mosquitos there attack at all time of the day. They love the white skin, especially new one. If you kids get sick there is a hospital in the town. Also the City Hall or "Alcadia" is next to the hospital. There you may ask for tourist info. Bring plenty of water bottle for the kids because it is very hot and dry. Culebra is a place to dye for it. It has water all around and people are very sweet and helpful. There is Chelie's Store where you can buy anything you may need.
Good Luck and enjoy your stay in the Culebra Paradise.

Eric:

The mosquitoes are like any where else. Dusk and dawn are bad. Lots of rain = lots of mosquitoes. So if it has been dry it won't be too bad. Deep Woods Off works great. Try not to spray too much on bare skin as kids can absorb it and have problems. The beach is never a problem during the day. Night time seems to be the worst as they find there way into the buildings. So spray the pajamas (long sleves and pants) and a little on the head and neck works great.

Roger
