Getting to Culebra
Culebra, Puerto Rico

We just returned from a trip to Puerto Rico which included a stay on Culebra--absolutely loved the place. We wanted to see a few places going and coming back from Fajardo, so we rented a car from L&M. Going from San Juan to Fajardo, we had a courtesy pickup to get the car, then had a courtesy dropoff at the ferry on the other end. The $56 charge included a $25 drop off fee and we spent $4 on gas. Going back to the San Juan we were picked up at the ferry and dropped off at the airport on the other end. Since you are only charged a drop-off fee one way, the bill was $32. Having a car enabled us to see a bit more of Puerto Rico--El Junque, Luquillo beach, etc.

The ferry was fine even though the ride to Culebra was a bit rough (1/18) and since we were staying at Mamacita's, it was an easy walk to our hotel. Yes, it took more time than flying, but we enjoyed the trip. The slow pace sort of helped us get into the island mood!

I've always said:

if you have the time and are watching your money - take the ferry.

If you have the money and are watching your time - fly.

I'd like to try your way sometime. Was the agency in any way "weird" about the arrangement, or is it commonplace? (I've never rented one-way anywhere)

of course though you missed some lovely weather here while you were gone...

My research (for my parents in March) indicates that L&M charges a drop off fee from SJU to Fajardo, but they do not charge a drop off fee from Fajardo to SJU. Guess they need to get cars to SJU, and a customer going that way benefits from it.

Happy Diving!

Apparently it is fairly common to do two one way rentals. L&M's computer system is set up so that you are only charged the drop off fee on the first leg of the trip if you are doing a round trip. This applied even though we picked up the car in Condado and drove to Fajardo then drove from Fajardo to the San Juan airport. We did not have to ask them to waive the second drop off fee. When it is off season (not sure when that is), they supposedly don't charge a drop off fee either way.

You are definitely right--if you have more money than time (and you don't mind the little planes) by all means fly.

Richard I hate to contradict you, but high season is also the summer (especially July) - even in Culebra. Try to get a room then :) and you will find out!

It used to be that you could not buy a bathing suit in PR in the winter months, because it's winter ... everything is relative. And the water IS colder - I wear a full 3mm suit with hood and gloves to go in the water!

Enjoy Culebra!

Not glad to be back for sure. My son will be in town from for a medical conference and was hoping for a nice break from Minnesota--a few degrees warmer but that's about all.

We will definitely return to Culebra.

Michael,

True, I have been at Memorial Day and around the 4th, and indeed demand is high, I was commenting on housing rates that some publish (high vs. low).

and in my mind there is never an "off" season...

in fact, I prefer summer, it's less of a shock to return home up North.
