Hotel en route to Fajardo.
Culebra, Puerto Rico

We arrive 4:06 pm in San Juan. I don't think we'll make it to the Fajardo ferry for 7pm (although I'd be happy to hear otherwise). Instead of going into SJ only to have to leave the next morning, can anyone suggest a pleasant, inexpensive place to stay more or less on the way from SJU to Fajardo?

From my experience (even if you check luggage) you should make the 7pm ferry. Let's say your bags take an hour after landing to arrive on the belt. You jump in a taxi/van outside the baggage claim doors at 5:10pm ... with the new Route 66 (I think that's the number but feel free to correct me) the door-to-door time seems to be between 60-75 minutes. That puts you at the ferry terminal by 6:30pm. I think you can make it.

If not, the Fajardo Inn always works for us. Clean rooms, close to ferry, restaurant and pool.

Hope this helps

Frank

Thanks for your input Frank. I was thinking we would do it with a one-way car rental (since I figured we would need it the next morning). If we did drive ourselves, would we make it in the same time? And do you know roughly how much the cabfare is SJU to Fajardo?

Many thanks.

If you rent the car you'll probably not make the ferry ... because you've got to factor in the time to pick up and drop off. But if you were to stay at the Fajardo Inn, the rental car plan would work. It's about the same amount of time ... assuming you know where you are going and don't get lost! When we get a van it's $65 or so ... but we usually have 5 people. Not sure if it is less with fewer.

I'll assume the same price -- we're a family of four. The Fajardo Inn on-line reservation site says they're full for the night in question, but if we can make it by cab I'd just as soon get on the Island the same night (we're in a real hurry to relax!).

I'll consult with the nice lady whose cab service is listed somewhere on this site.

Thanks again!

We booked but haven't stayed yet at the Passion Fruit Bed and Breakfast. They have two suites to accompany families nicely and it sure seems like a great place with great reviews on tripadvisor. ~~Wendy

With a family of four you could also just jump in a cab at the airport a little more (80) but they are readily available whenever you get out - no waiting!

Enjoy Culebra!

I've also found Henry to be very reliable for transportation.

If you are in a hurry don't rent a car--it definitely takes extra time to pick up and drop off.
