Old San Juan Questions
Culebra, Puerto Rico
Author: James Housego (---.home.cgocable.net)

My stay in Culebra will be bookended by 2 stays in Old San Juan. I was hoping that Culebra regulars might also be able to help out on a San Juan question.

My girlfriend and I are making our way to PR for March 11-19, essentially the spring break time. We have already booked our flights and are in the process of booking a hotel. The question is this: is it reasonable for us to expect to be able to book a $75/night hotel upon arrival by simply walking around Old San Juan, or is it necessary to book ahead of time? Dated decor, don't care. Room too small, don't care. Shared bathroom, don't care. Just want CLEAN, for $75. Can it be done? Can you throw out a couple of names of places?

If you're looking to do that in Old San Juan, never gonna happen. It's high season all the way until May so there are no deals that happen. To be on the safe side book it ahead of time. For that budget I suggest checking the small guest houses around Isla Verde/Ocean Park/Condado area. You are more likely to get better deals than in Old San Juan.

James,

FOr your budget, try Casa Candela in OSJ. It is in the same building as the club Rumba on San Sebastian. Still in the process of getting done, but a great owner and location. For more info, do a search on Tripadvisor or email me.

Good luck!

Sue

If you are willing to squeeze an additional $25.00 into your hotel budget, I would recommend the Coral Princess Inn which is a boutique hotel in the Condado area. I have listed the link below for your review.

what about el Convento?

sorry, kidding...but do check out the courtyard and lobby for a drink while around - across the street from the Cathedral.

it was right after 9/11 when everything was dirt cheap.

rooms were kinda small, but yes, 'twas nice

It should be seen as a part of OSJ none the less (I won't be able to stay there any visit soon BTW)

HI I used Caleta balcony rentals last year LOVED THEM....that is when I could get in touch with them. We rented a room on Calle Cristo for 500 dollars for 9 days. Private entrance, 2 bath, kitchenette separate from the bedroom and living room, 1 bedroom.

It was awesome. I am sure they do one nighters. We are going to call them soon to book for the summer because we plan on staying in Culebra longer than one day.

Let me know if you go with them and if they were accomodating.

Good Luck!

Gina

oh yeah and the other day Rachel Ray on the travel channel did a piece on OSJ and hit Bombaneros - def. worth a stop. Very old school. (actually I'm not crazy about her comments and choices: "YUMMO!" - she gets things, but the delivery and picks are sometimes too...clean-cut?)

not hard to find and I think every guide will list it.

Yay, La Bombonera is one of my favorite restaurants there. Try their "mayorca" sandwhiches. YUM.

And here's my very own insider tip: 205 Tanca;

This guest house used to be an apartment building with two apartments per floor and they turned every room into a bedroom. Most of them do not have a window and none of them have a bathroom or running water.

If you do get one of the former living rooms - La Sala - then you will face the street and have a balcony with lots of light, albeit no A/C. I prefer these.

It is hard to get someone on the phone (definitely no email, lol) and sometimes they had forgotten I called. But then again that might have been due to my Spanish.

Their usual modus operandus is showing up and seeing whether they have a room - I never was turned away, even though I could not get 'my' room.

Their number is (787) 722-5436. It is either Don Quique or Don Vicente (father and son)

Enjoy Culebra!

Has anyone stayed at the Hotel El Consulado (_not_ El Convento) in Condado? Any thoughts?

Larry, please stay on topic - this thread is about Old San Juan. For Condado you might want to post a new topic and the chances of people answering might increase!

The 'proper' name for Old San Juan is San Juan. Condado, Santurce, Hato Rey, etc., etc. are part of the metropolitan area and often referred to as 'San Juan' these days. To differentiate the two people have started calling the 'real' San Juan 'Viejo' or 'Old San Juan'.

And yes, they are very different things:
