The high speed ferry from San Juan was about $60 to $70 roundtrip. For an extra $30 or $40 you can fly from Isla Grande to Culebra in about 30 minutes time which would save you the drive to Fajardo and the long trip on the ferry.

Hi Jorge, a couple of plane questions for you (or anyone else) from a family of four looking forward to our first visit to Culebra in February.

1. Do you know if small children (under 50lbs) pay full price on the planes?

2. Do you imagine it would be possible to arrive in SJ International at 4:15pm and still be on Culebra the same day by plane?

Thanks in advance.

2. There is a 6pm flight on Air Flamenco out of the Isla Grande airport. Make your reservations early as February is high season.

Happy Diving!

Wow. Debbie that is a new one. The latest flight I used to know about was 5. I've not seen any discounts for kids, but I wasn't paying attention either. One last thought. If you could find another passenger, it makes economic sense and is WAY convenient to charter.

Larry, I spoke with Vieques Airlink at the Isla Grande Airport and they stated that their last flight is at 4:45 PM daily. Children 2 years old and younger do not pay. I also spoke with Air Flamenco in Isla Grande and their last flight is at 6:00 PM. Children 2 years of age and under do not pay.

Hey Doug, can I pick your brain on the whole charter thing? We are bringing family and friends down with us in March and will have 6 people (4 adults, 2 kids) flying over on Friday and 5 people (2 adults, 3 kids) flying over on Saturday. All 11 of us will be flying back to San Juan the following week. I called for charters, but they amount to a couple hundred bucks more than if we just all flew on a scheduled flight. Granted, if you divide that extra into a per person number, it's not too much more, but we are all families, so it adds back up!! Also, I haven't found a charter that could take all 11 of us back to San Juan. Any insight you can share??

Thanks!

Sue

We used Air America last New Years. With 5 guys it was exactly the same price as 5 commercial flight fares out of SJU. Since I haven't priced those, recently, I'm not sure if that is still true. 11 people is a tough number. Air America is 450 one way for up to 5 people and 600 for up to 9. Maybe there is a company with a plane that can handle 6 and you can book the 5 on Air America and the 6 in the other plane. I'll snoop around and see if I can find one.

I can't find Culebra Air - may have been bought by Air America. With 11 passengers worth of revenue, i gotta believe someone wants to serve you. I'd call Air America and explain the situation. See if they have a cost-effective solution, or if they can recommend someone to haul 6 of you while they haul 5. Another possibility is to talk to one of the airlines about a charter. Some years back, someone told me they will fly for the price of 6 tickets. Not sure if it was Flamenco or VAL - don't think it was Isla Nena.

Thanks for the info Doug! I couldn't find Culebra Air either, only Air America! When I was comparing prices for the charter, I was figuring around $100/RT per person, which is out of Isla Grande, not SJU, so I wasn't looking at apples to apples--my bad!

I think I will check VAL or Flamenco (our usual carrier) and see if we can get something going out of Isla Grande. That would be great if they would schedule a flight for the price of 6 tickets! We are anxious to get over to Culebra on our arrival and don't want to have to kill 3 hours waiting for the 4:30pm flight. We are all going back to San Juan a day early so the kids can get a history lesson in Old San Juan, so Isla Grande really does work best for us this time! I was thinking the same thing as you---with this many people flying, they'd want to help us out, right? I mean, we have flown on Flamenco and been the only 2 on the plane!!! They had to have lost money on that!

Doug,

I was surprised about the 6pm flight too, but it's true!

Culebra Air was Air Culebra, and yes, I think they were bought out by Air America.

Regarding charters, Isla Nena will charter (and is chartering my wealthy in-laws (sadly, not my PARENTS-in-law :)) in March directly from SJU on Saturday, March 10, but I don't know what they are paying. I'm afraid to ask. They are 6 passengers.

We are charting Air Flamenco from Isla Grande on March 8th, but are limited to 8 people. This presents a problem, as we are nine passengers. This is costing us $8 more per person than if we were to book regular flights. Well worth it in my opinion to get the time you want, the location you want, and the whole plane (cargo bay and all). Now, I don't expect anyone to overpack - no scuba gear or anything, but we don't expect to have to pay extra weight fees either. But, we do still have the problem of getting that last person over to the island, but we're working on that.

Sue, if you can charter Air Flamenco for 8 of your passengers back to SJU, ask them to have that flight leave around the same time as the remainder of your passengers on a scheduled flight. They can probably get you all back over to SJU around the same time. Although we are all coming over at the same time, our departures times are scattered, and some of them are taking the 6:30 am ferry to continue the tour of Puerto Rico.

Good luck!

Happy Diving!
Debbie

Thanks Debbie! I think your suggestions for chartering one plane for the return at the same time as a scheduled flight is definitely the way to go! Hopefully they have the planes available to do that. So, just to check my math, if we wanted to charter on the way over to Culebra with only 6 people, it would probably cost about $264 more than if we were on a scheduled flight, yes? Bummer---that's a little tougher for me to justify! $8 per person--not a problem at all!!

BTW Debbie, Air Flamenco really told you only 8 people?? I know a couple times we have flown with them, they had someone sit up front next to the pilot. I'm sure if you could do that then you could fit all 9 of your party on the plane! Sorry if you already know all this, but I just thought it wouldn't hurt to ask!

I'm bummed we won't be there at the same time, after hearing so much about it we would love to hear Lewis play. My husband is a Dead Head, we danced to one of their songs at our wedding for our "1st dance as husband and wife". Hopefully one of these times our visits will coincide!

Thanks for the help too Doug!

Yes, we were surprised that they said 8 - we were expecting 9 as well. As it stands now, Lewis is going to fly in a day early and make a Costco run, and I'll collect all the passengers the next day and herd everyone to Isla Grande. Little does he know, he's in for a bunch of chores while he waits for us to get there!

Maybe our next times will coincide; Lewis usually plays at least once at Heather's.

Happy Diving!
