Traveller's checks accepted??

We are travelling to Culebra in February. I do not like to carry a lot of cash but it seems some places do not like or accept credit cards. Do the merchants accept traveller's checks or is there a bank that cashs them? Advice, please.

Most places take Mastercard or Visa. There are a couple banks/ATMs on the island, and most places take the more popular travelers checks.
