Two Airports in SJ
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hello! Been watching the forum for a little while. My wife and I are flying in over Christmas for some R & R (diving actually). We fly into San Juan and because of flights, we're taking Air Flemenco to Culebra and Vieques from. Everyone reading and writing to this forum seems knowledgeable and helpful, so I thought I would just ask. From what I gather there are two airports on San Juan, the one I'll fly into from the mainland, and another I will have to take a cab to to fly Air Flemenco? Can anyone tell me what these airports are called locally; how far apart they are; what the taxi should cost? I've called, and because I speak very little Spanish, I don't fully understand what people are telling me. Any help would be appreciated!

Vince

The international airport (where you'll fly into from the mainland States) is called Luis Munoz Marin International, and goes by the abbreviation LMM and airport code SJU. Isla Grande Airport is a municipal airport 5-8(?) miles away from SJU. A taxi ride will cost you $15-20. You CAN fly directly to Culebra from SJU on both Isla Nena Air and Air Flamenco. Air Flamenco's schedules are much more limited than Isa Nena's. From Isla Grande, you have the option of taking Air Flamenco, Vieques Air Link and perhaps M&N Aviation. Reports lately tell us that M&N Aviation is either grounded, or temporarily for some other reason, not flying to Culebra.

Hope this is helpful.

Happy Diving!

Debbie, thank you. I was told that my flight on Flemenco was out of the smaller airport; do you know if they fly out of both? We're flying Christmas day- looking forward to a great escape, but I can see me doing something stupid and spending a day or two at airports because I didn't understand something...

Assuming I don't manage to strand us somewhere, what dive sites would you recommend?

The advantages to flying out of Isla Grande are the lower fare and less hassle from security lines. As I recall, SJU-Culebra was $165 roundtrip, and Isla Grande-Culebra was $100, roundtrip. I believe this is due to some sort of departure or gate usage tax at SJU. If I am correct, 2 people would save around between 60-70 bucks by flying out of Isla Grande, after accounting for the two cab rides. Most of the time I just fly whatever will get me to Culebra the soonest.

Yes, Air Flamenco does fly out of both, but on a very limited schedule from SJU. Like Doug said, the price of the ticket is vastly different. If your round trip ticket cost around $100, and they told you they are flying out of the "small" airport, then you need to catch a cab to Isla Grande Airport.

Are you diving with Walter (Culebra Divers) or Taz (Aquatic Adventures)? I've found that Walter and Taz call dive sites by different names, so I'll throw some dive site names out there, and hope you get to them. Cayo Raton, Impact (known as Carlos Rosario Beach by snorkelers), especially the "Wall" at Impact, The Arch, Cayo Agua Rock, El Mono.

Happy Diving!

Sure I do, but I'm not interested in publishing the coordinates on the internet. My dive pictures are on my website if you want to see them, but I don't want them linked up to your map. Sorry! :(

Happy Diving!

We're diving with Culebra Divers. Thank you for the dive suggestions. I'm looking forward to the mini vacation. Are there particular fish/coral to be on the lookout for?
