Do the people of these islands have a negative attitude towards Americans due to the fact that the US Military have used the islands in training exercises and live bombings????

If we consider the Caribbean as part of America (as in continent) - which a lot of people do - then they are Americans themselves and I don't see why they should. But there might be differences that go beyond geography and are of a rather political nature. I also don't think the fact of the US bombing would make them not like Columbians or people from Chile - do you?

You might find people get a little pedantic about people from the US considering themselves the 'only' Americans though :)

Enjoy Culebra!

Funny - when I see worldwide protests touting "death of America" - they are rarely referring to Columbians. Let's not get too hung up on how we define the term, since I think the intent of the first writer was clear.

Now to answer beth's question: I have traveled to both islands for years. Most do not appear to hold bias against anglo-s or north americans (hmm, does that include canadians and mexicans??) due to bombing, although they are not fond of the military in some cases. But remember too that many puerto ricans have served and contine to serve proudly and dutifully in the U.S. military.

The only time I felt otherwise was when I arrived on Vieques on the day of David Sanes' funeral - the youg man killed by the stray bomb. I decide to leave Vieques on day 3, rather than day 7 of my trip, under advice from local expatriates. Since then, no problem, although some youths in Vieques who are apaprently unemployed seem to bear a degree of hostility toward anglo-s, which I do not beleive goes beyond some comments.

On Culebra, I have only ever encountered ambivalence toward anglo-s and U.S> Americans based on concern over the impacts of "overtourism."

Gary, I apologize if my remarks came over as offensive - I tried to give it a light touch and thought that I made it clear that I understood Beth's intent.

You will not find 'Death to America' signs anywhere on the American continent. And I think US Americans could exercise a little care, especially since some of those signs are a result of not too much care in regards to other cultures or nationalities.

just my 2c

Enjoy Culebra!

No offense taken. I do not disagree with you on any of your points. I am simply acknowledging that we are often in a tough position of how to refer to ourselves other than "Americans" when we mean "U.S. Americans." There is no term to distinguish us from other Americas. Even "north Americans" doesn’t cover it. "United Stateians" does not work. We use what we're used to. My point simply was: When we fall back on "Americans" we shouldn’t be made to feel ignorant or stupid (especially someone who wants to come visit the island – a guest.)

Most folks know what we mean. For most of the world "Americans" means "U.S. Americans." But I understand the dissatisfaction that central and South Americans (and non-U.S. North Americans)feel with this arrangement.

I think Gary hit everything I wanted to say in his last post! Sorry I really did not want to get into anything political...just wanted how the people on the island are. I have been going to the Grenadines (the smaller ones) for 4 yrs now and was a little nervous about going somewhere different. Anyway Thanks for all the information!

I thought that the citizens of Vieques were quite gracious, helpful and welcoming. I have a great deal of respect for them and their struggle with the US Navy and have nothing but admiration for them.

The people of Vieques have much to be proud of and I am proud of them as well. I find it an honor to visit their island and spend my "tourist dollar" in such a place.
