Transportation to St. Thomas
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hello:
I'm trying to find a way to get from Culebra to St. Thomas. It's just 20-30 miles away so I don't understand why there's no affordable, easy way...
Isn't there a ferry or a boat service that can take me?
Or is there a problem with immigration? I have a European passport and would like to stay in Culebra for a few days and then move on to St. Thomas.
Any advice welcome! Thanks.

It's actually only 12 miles away. There is no commercial ferry or boat service, I suppose because the demand is not there. St. Thomas draws a whole different type of visitor than Culebra does.

You will need to get back to San Juan and then fly to St. Thomas from there. Airlines include Caribbean Sun, Liat and American Eagle.

Good luck.

Happy Diving!

You might be able to get a ride with a private yacht. But the time you need to hang out at customs to try to find one might not be worth it - especially since the ones at customs are coming from St. Thomas ;)

Culebra Water Taxi will take you. Depends how many people you are whether it's worth it!

Enjoy Culebra!

You have to clear customs in St. Thomas, then again when you get back, either in Culebra or SJU.
If you dedice to get there, be sure whoever takes you, is responsible enough to clear with customs. He/She will have to follow the same customs protocol, and if not you may get into good trouble.
Most people here do not know about this, and will express thorough knowledge, but believe me they do not.
Before going to St. Thomas with any local, go to the customs office located at the Culebra airport, and ask questions.

Hi:
Thanks for your input. I actually want to go to St. Thomas one-way and stay there to visit a friend and then go on to Barbados from there. So it would be only one person (me:) and one-way. I'll only have one bag and hope that customs wouldn't be such a hassle. But I feel that goingback to San Juan and boarding a flight for an island that is just 12 Miles away from Culebra seems too much effort if I can get there by boat.
How much is it to catch a ride in a boat from a local or the water taxi ? - I mean it's just 12 miles...:)
Thanks again, Sara

Sara, It is not just you that has to clear customs, but the vessel/aircraft & Captain/Crew taking you. That is why no one does it as a business from Culebra. You can get a charter plane to come from PR, pick you up, and on to St Thomas. The cost will by high, in the $300-$400 dollar range. You may find a local boater, but the cost will be simular. Hope this helps explain it all.
