Taz and Aquatic Adventures
Culebra, Puerto Rico

We wanted to go with Culebra Divers, but Steve (Walter/Monica were out of town) there said they were closed and recommended Taz at Aquatic Adventures.

**I and my girlfriend have never dived before**. It turned out to be a disastrous choice. You will be scared for your life under wanter working with Taz from AA.

Taz said he has spent 2-3 years each at Florida, Alabama and some carribean shores.

He is excellent if you are already a certified diver and need a boat ride with gear. But he is terrible with his temper and patience. Any mistake and he will scold you. If he is upset underwater about how long it is taking you to learn the basics, he will leave you by yourself for several minutes.

At one point my girlfriend ran into the common problem with water in the eyepiece with about 30 foot underwater. Taz was ahead, so I slowed down to stay with her. Taz didnt turn back and disappeared from our view. After some time which seemed like an eternity for two first time divers, he returned. But only to scold her that she is not following simple procedures he taught before. She is a strong woman and but refused to go for the second dive. I will write more about what happened when I went for a second dive (included in the price) with him.

Looking back, we were fortunate that he had just two of us with him that day. If there were 6 novice divers, I dont know what he would have done with his impatience. We loved Culebra but Taz definitely spoiled our diving experience.

Oh my gosh. This could have been a disaster in the making. Thank goodness your girlfriend is ok.

How is it you were diving without a C-card? Were you on a "resort" or "intro to scuba" class? If this type of class, be assured that he is not allowed to teach more than two divers at a time, so it's not a valid concern that it could have happened to more people at the same time.

I have to tell you that Walter lacks patience sometimes as well; his frustration with divers is generally when he has told them something more than once, by signaling or however he tries to get the message across and they don't listen. You must remember that anyone certified as a Divemaster is ultimately responsible for the life of their divers. Few people realize that diving is a dangerous "sport". Could Taz's scolding be because he didn't want you to make that mistake again - if you made that mistake again, could it cost you your life?

I've never dived under Taz's supervision, so I'm not trying to defend him, but it seems like there may be more to the story.

Would you share the name of the dive site where he took you and how deep you were diving please?

Happy Diving!
Debbie

I just got back from Culebra yesterday, and will formally tell you to do some "research" before you attempt on doing anything on this island. Don't take the local information as the gospel..... They need YOUR business (that's the advice I give you), from someone who's just been there.

First, the gentleman in question and his girlfriend were indeed 'resort divers' Mr. 'Ram' did not know how to swim and was terrified while in the water..I thought I could help him overcome his fear..my mistake..he was able to accomplish all the dive skills required while in shallow water but was unable or unwilling to do so during the dives..at one point spitting out his reg while in 38' of water..Yes, I may have been a bit short with him upon surfacing, (which we did immediately), but only out of frustration at his insistence on not doing what he had been instructed..This is the first time I have ever had a 'resort' do the sort of incredibly stupid things Mr Ram did..He will not be back to my business and I could not possibly be happier because of it..

My two boys and I dove with Taz last March and had a great time. It was the boys first time using scuba gear and they still talk about the experince!
We are coming back next month and I specifically booked with Taz again, as he was professional, safe and made the experince one of our best. Hopefully this dispells any unwarranted bad press.

My husband and I dove with Taz this past February and had a wonderful time. I snorkeled while my husband went diving. My husband is certified but has been diving many places ad felt the safest with Taz. He is very concerened with saftey and would not take chances! We even added a third day on the boat with him because we enjoyed it so much. I believe he would get frustrated in a case like this if someone wouldn't listen because he wouldn't take a chance when it comes to saftey.........thats why we loved diving with him and will be booking our dives with him on our next trip.

My father, Dan, and I recently stayed in Culebra and had a wonderful time scuba diving with Taz. We both became certified through Taz and he took great care to not only ensure safe dives, but to make sure that we were enjoying ourselves. He was very helpful in terms of teaching. In fact, my father had long ago taken a scuba diving class and could not become certified because he was unable to equalize. Taz was so knowledgeable he was able to show my father a new way to equalize his ears, and my dad could become certified! We both highly recommend Taz!
