playa Mosquito and playa Malena
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hello,
I was wondering if anybody knew where was the playa Mosquito in Culebra. I read about it on this website and on other websites but I never saw it on the map. I am not refering at the Mosquito Bay in Vieques.
Same thing for Malena beach, I cannot find it on any map.
I am heading for Culebra next week with my husband and we are planning on exploring the island by bike, at least we will try and we will see if we can make it considering the hills and the heat...
Thanks in advance for your help!
Isa

Greetings,

You may be on the island already, but I thought I'd respond just in case....

Playa Mosquito forms the shore of the bay (Bahia Mosquito) that's just to the southeast of the entrance to Ensenada Honda. It sounds like there might be some road construction going on there that's affecting access (and the environment). Your Malena Beach might be Playa Melones just west of town and north of Punta Melones.

Hope you have, or are having, a great trip. Here I am responding to an inquiry, and I haven't even been to Culebra yet. My trip is still a few months away, but I'm having a great time planning and learning what I can about the island in advance.

I see my link didn't work. Just cut and paste the URL below into your browser:

I should also mention that this USGS map is ancient and doesn't show many existing roads.

Steve, Malena is not Melones. Malena is between Punta Soldado and Dakity!

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael

PS: I also made your link live :)

Yes - I see it on the navigation chart now. I'm surprised I missed it. The chart calls the beach at Ensenada Malena the Playa Dinero. Does that refer to the property values there? ;-)

I may not know the island well enough yet to be answering questions, but at least I got someone else to respond to a rather old question. Thanks!

That's actually a good question, even though I never heard (nor have seen) the name 'dinero'. It is one of the most amazing bays in Culebra. When you walk from town and you come over the hill towards Punta Soldado (now the road is good enough to drive, but it is still better to walk ..) and you see Malena, you know you are in Paradise :)

Enjoy Culebra!

Thanks for your posts. We came back yesterday and we had an amazing vacation in Culebra, the landscapes are truly beautiful and the reefs are amazing. People were really friendly and we had a really relaxing time.
About the Malena bay, I think we may have seen it since we drove the paved road on the way to punto soldado and then parked the car and walked the rest of the way to punto soldado. We were actually the only one the all time. I guess this Malena is the beautiful turquoise bay we saw. But can we really swim there? What about this Dakity bay, is there an access to this?
I noticed that if you are willing to hike a bit, you can discover beautiful places and be the only one there. This is what we did most of the time since we rented a car for a day only.

Hey Isa......Please let us know if you were able to explore the Island by bike.
I have a very athletic 77 year old mother that bikes about 50 miles a day here at home and I am planning on taking her to Culebra and I am very curious what the biking is like.
Love to hear,

Tami

Hi Tami,

We finally didn't rent bikes. We rented a car for one day and the rest of the time, we walked everywhere (we love hiking) and we took publicos. Sometimes, peoples were giving us rides too.
There is a lot of hills (they can be steep) in the island and sometimes the roads are damaged but it is not too bad. The island is pretty small anyways so if your mother is used to bike 50 miles a day, you can give it a shot and you'll see. We were there 2 days ago and it was not too hot.

We had a great time and I was very sad to leave the island,

Have a great trip,

Isa
