the ads say Ocean view is a ten minute walk to town- is that true; hard walking or stroll? Any bars or other restaurants close to it. We are mainly interested in snorkeling and relaxing. any advice on Ocean view

It's an easy walk downhill into town, but there's a pretty rough hill at the very end coming back up. La Bahia restaurant is located on site. Other restaurants/bars within walking distance without going ALL the way to town are Tina's, Barbara Rosa's, Happy Landing and a few others whose names escape me.

Tina's and El Batey come to mind. Debbie, how is La Bahia?

debbie, thanks for answering. Have you stayed at Ocean view? Is it decent? Can you just walk out and snorkel on the beach from the motel or do you have to go somewhere else? We would like to be where we can just go out and spend the day snorkeling and lazing near our motel if possibe. If you have to go somewhere else to snorkel, any recommendations?
Thanks, Debby

Had dinner one night at La Bahia... Was a great evening out :) Great food and a very nice women cook! :) Make reservations though....

I don't think at Ocean View you can just go out and snorkel considering it's up hill and it's pretty much the only place on the island that you can't park your dinghy. :) Let's see.... I mostly remember if you wanna snorkel you have to either take the water taxi or some means of transpertation to some of the outter parts of the island. But I could be wrong...

The best snorkling we saw was off Carlos Rosario. It is a short hike from the parking area at Flamenco Beach. Follow the trail, about 3/4 mile to the beach. Ignore the side path to the left, and when you emerge onto the beach from the scrub, go to your right a couple hundred yards, where you'll see some hollowed out areas in the sea grapes. these come in handy for shade. There is an obvious cleared area through the reef. Here the white sand marks the way to swim out to where the wall of reef on your right opens up and the reef starts diversifyinf into fans, staghorn, elkhorn, brain and other corals. Last time I was there this demarcation point had been marked with a floating buoy. The best coral and fish are straight out from there as well as to your right. The further right you go, the better it gets, all the way to the mooring buoys up the coast, if you're a strong swimmer. If the hike is more than you want to do, you can hire a water taxi to haul you and your stuff out there.

Doug - I'm embarassed to admit I have not eaten at La Bahia, but I intend to make a point of it in March. I forgot to tell you that Tina's was open one night when we passed by, too.

Debby - I have not stayed at Ocean View, and like Doug and others have said, it is not within walking distance of snorkeling or the beach. The view of the water you see in their ad is actually a view of the bay. They are located high up on a hill above town. See the map on this website - they are located up the road to the right of the airplane pictured.

Maybe you want to check out Culebra Beach Villas or Tamarindo, both of which are within laziness distance to the beach. You can rent snorkel gear at Culebra Divers. They are listed in the To Do section. Doug gave, as usual, great snorkeling advice.

Enjoy your trip.

Happy Diving!
