lodging suggestions
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I've spent some time reading through so much great information on the island I can't wait to go. I planned on only visiting the mainland and now I'm going to tack on 4 days on this neat island. I will be travelling August 4-7 with my 2 teen kids (ages 15 & 17) and I would like a few suggestions:
I've looked at either staying at Mamacitas or Villa Boheme. There seems to be a $20 difference /per night in lodging... is the location or cleanliness a huge difference between the two?
Biking: Is there a place to rent bikes close by? Does anyone know how much that would run per day? (single parent budget :))
Any other helpful tips you can give to me regarding the weather or crowds during the month of August would be greatly appreciated.

I'll let someone else address the accommodation question, as I haven't stayed at either location.

On our first trip, we rented bikes and our second, we rented cars. There are a couple places in town that rent bikes. The island is very hilly and it can be very hot and tiring biking around to the beaches. Also, for the cost of three bike rentals, you're better off renting a car. We rented very reasonably-priced cars from Thrifty -- if you're staying in town, a jeep isn't necessary.

I would recommend Villa Boheme over Mamacitas. The rooms are equally furnished, and equally comfortable. The view at Villa Boheme is outstanding (it sits right on the bay). Mamacitas has a water view (canal) that can be quite noisy with boat traffic. If you ended up on the street side, the noise from cars can be quite disturbing to your sleep. Villa Boheme, while "in town" is just far enough away to avoid the noise factor. Good luck!

Happy Diving!
Debbie

Debbie is right about the noise we stayed at mamasitos and it can get noisey but more toward the weekend . The roosters are up every morning between 5 and 6am ,But that is just part of the island there.

mmmm.... Boheme over Mamacitas I guess, but my money is on Villa Fulladoza which I humbly believe to be the best value on the island. I would also rent a car on the island.

Denise, I'm sure biking would be fun. The island is very hilly and rocky that biking everywhere would probably not be a so good way to see the island. I agree w/the other post that a car may be best. You can rent a jeep...I'm sure your teens will enjoy bouncing around in that. If you and your kids are avid bikers and can take on rough terrains, then go for it!
