hi,

this is our first time going to culebra. and we are very excited to adventure it out. and we can only spend one day since we booked our hotel already in san juan. what can we accomplish in one day?

also, we rented a car for our stay in san juan. and if we drive our car to the ferry dock, is there parking lot near the Fajardo ferry. or is better off taking our cargo with us to the culebra. is it dangerous to drive a compact car in the island.

The best you can do in a few hours is get a public car and go to flamenco.
You will not have time to adventure, unless you like being in a hurry, and for that you may need a car.
Life moves very slow in Culebra, so if you get into the hurry ruch, you'll feel like you are out of line.
There are at least two parking lots right before the ferry dock, you will see the people walking.
Driving is very easy there, however, it is a very bad idea to take a rented car in the ferry. First you need reservations days in advance, bushes, and other objects in the road will give the rented car some scratches, and once you get the car into the ferry, the insurance does not cover.
To finish, if you go on Sunday, you will lose at least one hour when coming back, just to be sure to get in the ferry, lots of people coming back.

to add to Capt. J.Guzman's post, note that the cargo ferry is running on a very limited schedule these days.

You might not be able to get a reservation at all. As the spaces are saved for the trucks bringing supplies to the island.

Flamenco is not within walking distance of the ferry terminal. You can take a publico for $2.

You can map the route from San Juan to Fajardo at yahoo maps.

Hey Sue, on top of what others have said, I don't know of any rental car companies that will allow you to take your car off the island anyway. With the parking areas, you'll be fine leaving a car for the day, they have fenced in parking areas that you pay like 5 bucks for the day right by the dock.

You'll see as soon as you get off the ferry that there will be a ton of different buses (publicos), most going to Flamenco. The drivers are awesome, just make sure to ask your driver specifically what time he will be back to pick people up from the beach so that they can make it back to the ferry on time.
