From Culebra guesthouses to the price of beer
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I just spent the whole evening reading up on Culebras! There are so many fab reviews about this island alone that my heart is now set to visit as a last minute trip. (I'm in desperate need of R&R!)
So I found the airfare which is doable and now, I need to budget the rest the trip out in order to convince DH that we can do this as such short notice...next month! Can anyone advise me on the following? It's a lot... hee

1. If I book this flight, we will be arriving past midnight. Could anyone advise of a safe and inexpensive accommodations closest the San Juan airport? We just need to crash for the night before continuing on.

2. Should we purchase an igloo/ice/water, etc. before heading to Culebra? What would be more economical? Where can we go? I plan on packing ultra light.

3. How does the taxi service work from the hotel to Fajardo? What is the custom for tipping?

4. I'm having a hard time figuring out how to preserve our budget while staying in Culebra. The max I had in mind was $300 for the week, which after some research, I found is laughable! :)

* I think it would be great for us to camp out on Flamenco Beach for a couple of days - is there an online map of the campsite?
* What's the best spot for privacy?
* When is it usually busy there? Where is the closest spot for cheap eats?
* What's the condition of the bathrooms? Is it mosquito ridden? (I read a review about an inn some place that had mosquito ridden bathrooms...*shiver*)
* How far to town for cheap local eats and for groceries (fresh veggies/meats/fish/fruits/water/deli).
* Is there any way to get a hold of Willie by phone? ;)

5. Where is the nearest laundromat - how much is it for
the washer/dryer and what are the hours?

6. I've already checked out the www.culebra.net site but don't see any menus posted yet. Can anyone advise which restaurants to hit for
* cheap local eats (nothing fancy, just down home grub!)
* fresh fish
* best coffee (iced coffee?)
I would LOVE prices as this would help me better prepare financially. This is a last minute trip to de-stress so we're limited!
* generally, how much are beers and how much are drinks at Mamacita's?

7. Websites are limited in description of the following guest houses/inns:

* Capt. Guzman, you've mentioned the following spots on these boards. Could you ellaborate as to whether either or both have adequate hot water as well as which room you prefer and why? please :)
~ Villa Fulladoza
~ Villa Boheme

* Villa Melones, has anyone been? What's the cost?
* Palmetto Guest House - anyone been?
* Posada La Hamaca?
* Mamacita's? (can you hear the music from the room??)

8. Where are the jeep rentals located in relation to the dock?

hmm..I think that's it! heh! Thanks in advance for your input! :)

Just a lot Ha ! To begin 300.00 budget is way to low for a 5 or 6 night stay. You should be thinking above 500.00.
I rather stay at Villa Boheme, ( A/C, clean rooms, community kitchen, no TV on Room) It is very close to most retaurants, wich by the way some you can go walking. Carlos Jeep rental is good too, and you can walk there too.
You may bring a small cooler, enough for a 6 pack. You will frind plenty of groceries and water too, in Culebra.
The last time I used the laundromat, it was located in the back of the gas station in front of the ferry dock, ask in the liquor store.
Posada la Hamaca is good too, close to Villa Boheme, and Mamacitas is a nice place to relax, and share some time with others.
It sounded like your staying for SEMANA SANTA, GOOD FRIDAY included, if it is so, DO NOT GO CAMPING, that is if you want peace, and relax. On the other hand, if you like loud music, lot of people shouting, and a crazy partying, go camping.

Most good hotels charge about 75.00 to 95.00 per night. and I have not seen one that has no hot water, so do not worry too much about that.
Finally I suggest you call for reservations as this is a must in high season.

Hope this helps...

Cap. Guzman! Thank you! Can you believe I was able to come up with all those questions at 4:30am EST?! hahaha. Thank you for even taking the time to read it!

Yikes! Semana Santa?
Where is it going to be the most crowded/nosiest? Or rather, is the whole island going to be hopping? ;)

Sorry for my ignorance, but what exactly goes on in Culebra during Semana Santa? Will the island/beaches be crowded? Will the restaurants close?

hey Michael - kudos to you for keeping up with the boards. I love the updated subjects for this thread. Thanks :)

How crowded is it going to be? Only wondering because I had my hopes up on peace/quiet/some solitude at least for a few days - not that I don't enjoy being out and about and having a blast - in fact, I'm kinda running away from that...haha. Will all the beaches be crowded?

I did some searches for the week before and the weeks after but the prices go up. I have to get to tranquil Culebra!! =D

Thanks for the kudos :)

The biggest concentration of crowds is going to be at Flamenco Beach, Town and in Dakity - a bay at the entrance of Ensenada Honda. If you have a car or scooter you will definitely be able to find a quiet spot or join the crowds.

Enjoy Culebra!

Semana Santa is the week where good Friday is.
And there is always a crazy partying with loud, loud music, very crowded, and not peaceful at all, I refer to the camping grounds and public beaches.
Some restaurants may close on Friday, the ones open will be very busy.

We also arrive in late at night and decided to just stay at the Best Western-airport. We wanted to stay out of the city, but ran into the problems of too late to check in and minimum day requirements for stay. I also was considering hotel villa del sol in San Juan www.villasdelsolpr.com or the Fajardo Inn (but arrival would be close to 1:30 a.m. and then backtracking to the Rainforest the following day. The Best Western is around $130 and includes breakfast which is helpful for a family. I was amazed at how expensive lodging is in San Juan. good luck! We will be down there the week following Easter. I hope the island is back to its slower pace! Best of luck. ~~W
