A week in Culebra, what to do?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I will be in Culebra for a week May 19 to 26. Hoping to find some cheap accommodations for one. I want to travel around the island, do some snorkeling, hiking, enjoy secluded beaches, some scuba (night dives). Any suggestions on where to go, what to do?

Is anybody going on any group trips that they want to add one more to supplement the cost?

Laura,

A copy of years ago I recommended a number of must sees - here you go:

First recognize there are no absolutes on Culebra :) - one must often go with the flow.

Top things to do:

a. Visit Flamenco Beach.

b. Snorkel Melones and Carlos Rosario reefs.

c. Hike to Brava Beach with you new wife and spend a morning alone on this beautiful remote beach. Bring a big beach towel, water and sun tan lotion for those bare spots.

d. Listen to Wiki and Jorge play the congas on Saturday night at Mamacita's. Sip on a bushwacker and get ready to dance.

e. Go diving with Walter and search for the lion fish and lobsters.

f. Visit Sue Zinkowski and view her artistic impressions of Culebra. Then go to Butuki and see Evan's art and then Jorge at Art Fango.

g. Take a water taxi or kayak to Luis Pena. Bring a picnic lunch and your snorkeling gear.

h. Visit the museum on road to Zoni Beach.

i. Hike up to the helipad above Flamenco Beach or drive to Cerro Balcon and get 360 degree views of the island. Cerro Balcon is above Zoni Beach.

j. Have breakfast at Dinghy Dock and sit at a table overlooking the harbour. Watch the tarpon along the dock.

k. A day of bone fishing with Chris.

l. Take a trip to Culebrita with snorkeling, lunch and a hike to lighthouse.

m. Dine at Suzi's.

There is plenty to do and you cannot go wrong with any of these suggestions.

Most importantly, take an afternoon nap and awake to the peace and quiet of the island and the songs of the birds.

Congratulations and have fun!

John

Maybe you want to drop by Bahia Marina. Their pool has a swim up bar and grill. A nice change of pace for lunch. Then head back to Flamenco Beach! Speaking of FB, the food kiosks are nice but last time I visited, there were a tremendous amount of flies and stray cats. It was a bit nutty when the cats begged for scraps...
