Safety?

I am a first time backpacker. Safety is very subjective idea but generally how safe is it for a woman in Culebra or Pieques or even San Juan?
What are the precautions one should take there?

Based on my few times on Culebra i can really affirm is very safe since the island is not that crowded, VIEQUES is more like US virgin Islands and theres is more nite life just dont hangout in the guetto like places. The main island that i grew up in San Juan never had a problem, locals LOVE Americans and specially Tourists just again hangout in nice and not guetto like places and you be just fine.
