Kayak Questions
Culebra, Puerto Rico

This will be our first trip to Culebra and our first experience kayaking, so I have a question regarding the Kayaks.

1) Do we want a two person kayak, or two singles?

2) Do we transport them via car or just paddle them from the rental to our dock?

3) If transport via car, what kind of car should we rent for transporting kayaks?

4) How much is kayak rental and will a rental place be open the last week of October?

1. I would suggest a double - if one of you gets tired, it's waaaay easier to paddle the other person on the same boat than towing another kayak (been there) - but you guys know each other for a while and know your strengths, so if you are a match in terms of paddling, go for 2 definitely more independence .. then again, the added waterline and 2 paddlers you will have a wider range!
2. really depends where you want to go - your strength. talk to your rental outfit
3. heve them drop the kayaks off ;)
4. better get that info straight from the horse's mouth, or rent a place that has kayaks as well!

Enjoy Culebra!

I will second Micheal on getting the double. We took 3 kayaks from Zoni to Culebrita, 2 doubles and a single. My wife and daughter were in the double, my nephew and another child in the other double. I had the single. Both my wife and daughter became tired, so I tied on to them and was able to pull them back to Zoni. If they had a triple, I would have rented it!

Watch the surf and wind reports. It can make all the difference in your experience. If the surf is high, you should consider moving your kayaking to the leeward side of the island. If the water is too choppy on the Culebrita side, then kayak to Luis Pena. Don't try to force your way through rough water. Trust me, it is a great deal more difficult, a great deal, to plow your way through rough seas. Some get seasick, so prepare.

Pack food and drink in dry bags and strap to the kayak. We took frozen, 2 liter soda bottles, filled with water the night before. Refreshing in the hot sun!

You can leave from the dock or have a drop off. Let the wind/wave conditions help you with your choice. We used a Jeep and I tied the kayaks to the roof myself. Protect the roof with towels and rinse any sand from the kayaks before mounting.

We paid $50/day for each kayak.

And don't let Jerry see you with a kayak on one of his jeeps roofs. I thought he was going to blow a gasget. And it had a roof rack. LOL

Many thanks to all. We leave tomorrow night and will be Culebra on 10/27 until 10/31. I reserved a flight with VAL and a Jeep with Jerry (he seems every bit as great as all of you have said!).

We'll figure it all out there about how we get our kayak, but it will definitely be a double.

All the best,
