Culebra Ferry

Anyone planning on visiting Culebra I would suggest taking a charter plane....sad to say but it's just not worth the aggravation of trying to take the ferry. There is no sense of organization! ... it's really ashame that they don't improve the system. I recently visited Culebra on 7/9/11 and don't plan on doing it again till another ten years or so. Flamenco Beach is BEAUTIFUL but honestly not worth the trouble! we got to the ferry dock to purchase tickets @ 7am and they didn't actually start selling them until an hour prior to the ferry departing. Needless to say we didn't make it on the 9am ferry we had to wait till the 3pm ferry. There were people waiting on line from 5 am and didn't make it on the 9am ferry either. Once we finally purchased the tickets they didn't allow us to purchase round trip tickets! so that meant that we had to do the same process all over again coming back from Culebra. Once we got to Culebra @ 4:30pm we waited about another 20-30 minutes for the hotel to pick us up from the dock. Next morning we got up checked out and went to the ferry dock again to try and purchase tickets for the ferry on Sunday heading back to Fajardo @ 5pm and again we were unable to purchase those tickets because they wouldn't sell us the tickets to the 5pm ferry until an hour before departure. We then decided to go to Flamenco Beach, we got there about 12:00 and left @ 2:30pm thinking we would start making the line at least 2 hours before departure. Of course the line was OUT OF CONTROL!, there were people who didn't fit on the 1pm ferry and were waiting for the 5 pm ferry....Make a long story short, we didn't board a ferry until 10:30 pm and got back to Fajardo about 12:45am! And not only that but we had to board the Cargo Ferry which was roach infested .... roaches coming out of everywhere....WHAT A NIGHTMARE!

Good afternoon,
Sorry to hear of your ferry troubles.

In the summer months, & particularly in July, the ferries are incredibly crowded. This is generally only at these times or on occasion for holiday weekends.

For this reason we ALWAYS advise our guests to fly (not charter) & to book one of the many times/day regularly scheduled flights ahead of time.

IF folks do take the ferry, we offer the service of purchasing round trip tickets in advance & mailing them to them. Again, a bit of planning involved, however well worth it to be able to arrive at the dock with tickets in hand & not to have to spend your vacation waiting in lines.

Best,
Terrie

Hi Terrie,

Thank you for the reply...I didn't know that kind of service was offered at your Guesthouse....Although I do have to say that I do remember looking at Palmetto Guesthouse and it being an option for us stay, however, there was no availability. I will however keep you in mind, I would love to go back to Culebra and really enjoy the beaches!

Thanks again for the info! it makes a world of a difference knowing that purchasing round trip tickets is an option...however, I'm a bit confused as to why we weren't given that option when we purchased our tickets.

Local Calibresians can buy round trip tickets in advance. Also, moral to your story, don't take the ferry in the summer. Every kid in PR is out of school and hopping the ferry to Flamenco. Cheap boat ride and cheap camping so everyone goes. Not sure why they don't raise the ferry rate to one more realistic like others around the islands.

Good tip, but you're right they should really raise the fair and increase on ferry service...but interestingly enough there weren't that many kids traveling to Culebra, 90% were adults and most of them were tourists. I really think that they need to seriously improve on tourism @ the end of the day it's tourism that will leave them profits and I know for a fact that tourists would definately pay asking price. I think Puerto Rico has alot of work ahead of them, I met so many foreigners who have relocated to PR and have done amazingly well catering to tourists, it's a shame that foreigners see the potential that Puerto Rico has as opposed to the Natives.
