August is smack in the middle of the rainy season. As mentioned (without the stats-& the stats were Fajardo's, so sometimes that makes a difference-so close, yet so far...), the rainiest months are from Aug.-Nov.
Having said that, during the rainy season it rains most days or nights. Often, during the rainy season the rain is heavy & short. However it can be for longer periods, too.
As per above, there is really no way to predict the rain &/or hurricanes with great accuracy, however I'd concur with the advice of purchasing trip insurance. Although, if the rain is going to ruin your holiday, it may be best to choose another time or destination.
