Running
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hello there. I'm a runner and would like to log a few miles while I'm there. I've been to Culebra twice before, and I have my doubts about the safety of running on the roads that extend across the island.

To you other runners: Where do you run? Do you feel safe (from cars)?

Many thanks.

Good morning,
I am currently training for my 3rd (trained for all) on Culebra (live here year round).

I run all the time here & have 1-6 mile loops & combine them to get longer distances.

The majority of the cars (drivers) are fine.

Good afternoon,
Obviously typing too early. Post should have read "training for my 3rd" MARATHON.

Zoni from the bottom of the hill to Carlos is 5 miles (hill, hot, w/no water miles). From the top of the first hill out of Zoni is 4 miles.

To follow up and offer another perspective.

We had a lovely visit there, as we always do. I ran mostly on beaches, often many times back and forth.

Terrie, I greatly respect your opinion and your dedication, but there's no way I'd run on the road to Zoni. The first morning we were there, we drove from Zoni into town about 7:30, and we passed a runner coming toward us as we approached a curve. It may have been you - wearing earphones. As we moved left to give the runner room, we got around the curve to see a car speeding toward us (at probably 35-40 mph), in the middle of the road, and not slowing down or moving left at all. I doubt the runner had any idea that this was happening since it was behind her and she had earphones.

As much as I'd love to run that path, I don't trust the drivers at all. While the road to Flamenco is more heavily traveled, it's also wider and with more of a shoulder. But it's shorter, too.

I thought I'd come back and offer my opinion, too. I appreciate your input, and I wish you well running on Culebra.

Good afternoon,
Actually, the Flamenco road is often more "dangerous," depending on the time of the day as the taxis are often moving quickly to get folks to/from the ferry dock.

I suppose it's all in the perspective, too, people sometimes thing the drivers here are "crazy" here, but having lived in many spots around the world where I'd consider the driving to be much more "agressive/perilous" than here, I generally don't have too many issues while sharing the roads.

Happy running!

For me the most dangerous part of running on Culebra are the hills, heat and humidity! :-) Running in the early morning will not only cure those ills but you may find less traffic on the roads.
