I wouldn't take a decent road bike on Culebra's roads. As far as I know all the bikes available for rent are mountain bikes. Conditions include paved roads with potholes and no shoulders, some steep hills, some gravel roads in poor condition. And it is hot! Having said all that, we relied on bikes as our only source of transportation the first year, and for all but two days last year. If you take your time, have plenty of water, and are in decent shape, you can ride almost anywhere you want to go, and it's certainly easier to find a place to park in town. It's an easy ride from town to Flamenco and back. Zoni was the toughest ride, with steep hills. Our daughter was 14 the first time we came and she didn't want to ride all the way back -- as it turned out we could have made it easily, since Dick wouldn't come down the last hill into Zoni so we had the steepest part of the ride behind us by the time he came to pick us up. Dick and Kathie rent Specialized bikes, and he includes old inner tubes to use to tie stuff to the rack on the back. We were able to carry snorkeling gear, lunch, cameras, sunscreen, etc. easily using a small daypack and the racks on the bikes.

Zoni is my favorite sandy beach.

If you're in tune to 4-wheels, the VW Things are the way to go....

Low gas mileage, fun to drive, and no great sweats if you happen to bump into a whatever....

And great people who rent them.

Not to insinuate that you can crash 'em, but a minor brush into an errant bush won't cost you your mortgage.

We didn't really have any problems with traffic. It's not exactly congested, and the roads are in too poor a shape for anyone to go too fast, although we did encounter one guy on the road to Zoni who was going way too fast for the narrow winding road. People are generally pretty good about giving you room. Like anywhere else you just need to keep your eyes open and be careful -- watch for people swerving to miss potholes, and for iguanas and chickens that run out in front of you. We had a lot of fun biking. I would ride into town every morning and get a fresh loaf of bread and some pastries at PanDeli, as well as riding to the beaches. Dick and Kathie, who we have rented bikes from both years, also rent the VW Things.

Check out Culebra Vacation Planners for lodging -- they have a variety of rentals in various sizes and price ranges. There are guest houses, casitas, houses, etc. There's information under the Shelter link from this page.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_181

On Tortola there is one known as Da ting.

Dick and Kathy's are very basic and rusty and ours had no real top, but we still loved hoe funky it was...
