Alternative ways to get to Culebra? Any Ferry tips??
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Seeing as that there is some sort of FAA issue with Air Flamenco and Vieques Air Link, I have had to search for alternate ways to get to Culebra. I called Mamacitas Guesthouse for help and I was told to get a taxi from San Juan and take the ferry into Culebra. Is there anything I should know ahead of time so that things go smoothly? Are there any tips to offer up from experienced travelers using this method? (what to expect, how early to arrive, getting a ticket in advance)

Sorry for this seemingly simple question, I just have never traveled to PR before and I want to make it to the island without any issues.

Thanks for any help!!

Good afternoon,
Vieques Air Link IS flying (limited) scheduled flights.

The ferry has been running & the passenger boat docked today.

As a resident of Culebra (& Culebra being the 4th island that I have lived on), getting there "without an issue" is an unreasonable expectation-lol. You should always be prepared for delays & the unexpected-it's part of the "adventure" :).

another option is to drive to the ferry or airport in ceiba.
you can get a car an avis rental at sju and drive to the ceiba office and drop the car off.
they will then drive you to the ferry or airport.
sometimes for as littleas $30

Hello, the easiest and funnest option is our water taxi service we leave from Fajardo to culebra on our speed boat and it only takes 30min compared to 2hrs on the ferry. If you would like to know our rates please send us a email. thank you and good luck

Hi and good luck comming to Culebra, the ferry has resumed normal operations but be aware that despite the three trips a day they may get sold out. So plan ahead typically you will be able toget a ticket but it may be for the later cargo ferry, don't remiss though you will have a great time when here. If you are thinking abut chartering please keep us in mind

The cargo ferry is better for passengers as it is never sold out, easy to get a ticket and not a "cattle boat". I would say to be @ the dock at least 1/2 hour before departure and passengers can buy a ticket and board. When the horn blows the captain is already setting sail.

Good evening,
Just a bit of clarification on the previous post:
-it is recommended that you be at the ferry dock at least one hour before the ferry departure time
-you need to purchase all ferry tickets (cargo/passenger boats) BEFORE boarding at the ticket sales window.

Also, both cargo & passenger boats can be full or empty. The passenger ferry tends to be a much shorter ride. Too, sometimes (when the ferry is carrying the gas truck) passengers (besides the driver of a vehicle) are not allowed.

Have a good trip!

Oops. My error. I see that the post did not say buy the ticket ON board, but AND board. Apologies :)
