Is the flight to Culebra scary?

We are traveling to Culebra from Puerto Rico (flying into SJU) TOMORROW!!! From everything that I have read, it seems like flying is much easier than taking a taxi and ferry (comments?) I'm just honestly really nervous about flying in one of those tiny planes. What is it like? Should I be nervous? Is there a bathroom? What's the seating like?

Best, C

Also, I think that it is supposed to rain/thunderstorm tomorrow. How should this affect our travel plans? And...is the taxi ride also scary?

Hello, flying is the quickest way to get there from SJ and when you come into the Culebra airport the plane needs to nose dive to land correctly. Another option you have would be going on a private boat that allows you to experience the trip allitle more. good luck and have fun

Hello C,

Flying is definitely the quickest and easiest option. I was definitely nervous for my first over to Culebra and was white-knuckling my husband's knee the whole time, especially on the landing. That being said, it was actually a really fun experience in hindsight and now it doesn't bother me at all. I think unless you are claustrophobic or have a really intense fear of flying you will be fine and you will really feel proud of yourself once you land!

If you are flying Flamenco (or VAL, too, I believe) the seating is 4 rows of seat for 2 passengers each. The front two rows enter the plane from a door on one side of the plane and the back two rows enter from a door on the other side. There is definitely no bathroom. It is tight quarters and it is hot after they close the doors and before you are up in the air with some breeze coming in. Once you are up, the view is incredible, so make sure you have your camera on you.

As far as the taxi in San Juan being scary, I'm going to have to say yes there too. At least for me, it usually is and that isn't necessarily fading with time. Some trips are better than other, depending on the condition of the taxi and the amount of traffic. That may not bother you as much, though,as you are from New York.

Don't worry, it will all be worth it once you get to Culebra! You will be feeling the island vibe relax your neurotic side before you know it!

The plane ride is a piece of cake. You can get a drink at the little airport before you leave if you want to take your edge off. The plane flys just below the clouds and around the big rain clouds so you will be fine. If it's really bad weather then they won't fly for everyones safetey.

And on my last cab ride between airports the car in front of us hit a piece of metal and flipped it up into the air. Our cab rode over it at the right angle to send it through the floor of the cab. It came through the floor right in front of my foot and ripped the front seat from the floor board. I was sitting in the back and it sounded like an explosion going off. I look down and see a hole in the cab floor with the highway racing past below my feet. Holly $h_t!!!! So after that experience, the plane was nice and relaxing. And I got that heineken at the airport!!

Have a great trip!

You guys are awesome.
I am super claustrophobic and scared of flying but I have anxiety pills! and perhaps a heineken. Whew.
Plus, that taxi story is CRAZY!!!
Ok wait, one more question - it flies below the clouds? does that mean it's closer to the ground than big commercial flights. i mean, i'm guessing the answer is, duh yes. i just like to be able to visualize these things before they happen.
I'M SO EXCITED!!!!
any must-do recommendations that haven't already been discussed on this site?

The flight is amazing and not at all scary. Yes, the planes are small and yes they do fly much lower than a commercial jetliner. We can always see Playa Azul in Loquillo on the big island on our way to Culebra or Vieques, where we stayed in 2006. We were there last month and flew from SJU to Vieques and it was raining while we were in the air. Your luggage will be secured behind a cargo net in the back of the plane. They seat you according to your weight, so you might not be sitting with your husband, etc. You are going to have a great time. I am already making plans for our 2 weeks on Culebra in June 2011. As far as the taxi, our experiences have good. John is an excellent driver and takes the back streets to avoid traffic.

Commercial flight: 38,000 ft elevation
Flamenco flight : 1,000 ft elevation
Landing safely on any runway: priceless
