traveling to and camping in culebra

Hello,
I am traveling to Culebra next month and am wondering the best way to get from SJU to the island- I'd prefer the most scenic route-and not flying unless necessary. I saw some posts indicating that there are ferries; are they easy to get to from SJU? Also, Im thinking about camping and am looking for the best places to do that. Any ideas?
Thanks, Josie

Suggestion: don't rent a car on the big island and try to take it to the little island.

Check the Fajardo ferry schedule for the times it's going to culebra on your day of travel (search this site). Take a cab from SJU to Fajardo ferry. Takes ~1hr. Costs ~$80+tip. Cabby will stop at stores or food places if you need/want anything. Not sure if I would define that road trip as scenic. Take ferry to culebra. Takes ~1.5hr. Costs $2.50. Boat ride is scenic. Flight is $105 rt and is MUCH quicker. I would say the plane ride is scenic.

The place to camp is Flamenco. Buss will take you from ferry to camp site. They run somewhate regulary between town and camp site.

Enjoy!

You can also rent a car in San Juan and drop it in Fajardo -- it is cheaper than a publico, but you'll need to deal with traffic yourself rather than letting someone else drive. Also, be sure whoever you rent from will give you a ride to the ferry docks when you turn the car in. We found the best deal from Enterprise. The one-way drop fee is much more when renting the other way, from Fajardo to San Juan.

Linda, I have not taken the publico in a while, but last time I did the whole trip from SJU to Fajardo cost me $8.50 - can you please direct me to the car rental that will be cheaper?

I think you are referring to taking a taxi. They are operated by the publico owners and will charge you, as mentioned by Geronimo, around $75. IMO still better than going through the hassle of renting a car, if all you want is go from SJU to Fajardo!

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael
