Camping Storage in Culebra
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi,

I plan on camping in Culebra for a few days in March. Of course, I also want to explore the island! Is there any place I can safely store my camping gear and personal belongings while I hike/bike around the island?

I could also rent a jeep to explore in and keep my things, but at $45/day it's a little expensive. Plus we'll be renting a car to drive from San Juan to the ferry, and paying for it by the day even though we won't be using it. I wouldn't want to transport the car on the cargo ferry as I have heard it is extremely unreliable.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Gracious!

You can take a cab from SJU to the ferry for ~$80 each way and not bother renting a car on the big island. That might save you $ to rent a jeep on Culebra. Also, you will have to pay to park your car in Fajardo and it can get REALLY busy there.

Hi!

Thank you so much for your reply! I'm being quoted ~$100 to rent a car from San Juan for the week. So if a taxi to the ferry is about $80 one way, ironically it would be economical to rent the car on the big island. But I didn't know if there was another option for keeping our camping gear some place on Culebra and what other campers have done. At ~$50/day it's quite expensive to rent a car on Culebra when we ultimately need it most just to keep our stuff stashed away.

Thank you again!

Renting a car for $100 per week?! Please tell us your source.

I think the only thing you can rent on Culebra for under $50 will be from Dick and it is a vintage VW Thing with a stick shift.

We camped for 10 days in January 2008. My info will be somewhat dated, but at the time there were no storage facilities at the Flamenco Beach Camp Grounds. Quite frankly, none were needed. But at the time, there were few campers and all was quiet.

Peace out
Herb

www.expedia.com (under cars)

Pickup/Dropoff: San Juan Airport

Economy: $22.95/day (we actually only need it for 5 days)

For a full week Thrifty gives $164.29

Of course it would be more if you do not have insurance and opt to purchase theirs, and if you're under 25.
