Has anyone had any experience - good or bad - with drinking tap water at the hotels or around the island ?

Hola! The water in Puerto Rico is safe to drink. You don't have to worry about contracting any gastrointestinal sickness if you consume it. It may, however taste different than the water you are accustomed to. My family in Cabo Rojo (southwest part of the island) drink bottled water just because the tap water has become too salty and heavy due to the mineral content. When we went to Culebra, the water tasted similar, but consumed it anyway. We also purchased bottled water. You will see many locals drinking bottled water because of their dislike for the chlorine taste or the overall taste. Take a sip, if you like it, then drink it, it's free. If not, bottled water can be purchased almost everywhere from the local street vendor, supermarket, etc. Happy travels! J

Another alternative is to buy a couple of limes and throw a lime wedge in your glass of tap water. It's cheaper than bottled water, but counteracts the chlorine. We have fabulous well water at home, so city water anywhere bothers me due to the chlorine. You can find limes at many of the grocery stores on Culebra.

It actually started on the East side of St. Thomas, diverted up and over the mountain, and then air lifted to el yunque.

Well, for SOME of us...did you read about the Rum Festival they just had on PR last weekend, Michael? Ed was there, lots of fun, it sounds like. Memorial Day weekend and there must have been three major events going on! One of them a food tasting biggie. This weekend is a jazz fest. So all of those folks who wonder how to spend time between coming to Culebra and hanging out waiting for their planes are going to have to start marking their calendars for when to bracket the weekends with being in PR.

Hmmm. Wonder when the Llama Races will be.....Paso Llamas?

Well, after having now come and sadly left Culebra, I can reply to my own question - for other traveler's info.
The tap water was fine - especially when right from the frig! My main concern originally was of the 'Montezuma's revenge' variety - which was fine as well!

Lemons, limes, and - other additions - even better!

Pat, thanks for the follow up...it's an often asked and debated question, so it's great to have an objective voice here.
