Sea Turtles
Culebra, Puerto Rico

We'll be in Culebra this April, during sea turtle hatching season. So I'm wondering if there's any volunteering opportunity / sea turtle hatching eco tour during this period. Also wonder if it'll be safe to sit on the beach, i.e. what are the chances that I'll be sitting on a turtle nest on Flamanco beach?

they identify nests when possible and fence them off.

I believe they do invite volunteers to stay up all night to record the locations, try contacting Fish and Wildlife.

I have also been wondering about opportunities involving sea turtles. I called the US Fish & Wildlife office, who said I needed to talk to the DNR. They said they would leave a message for the DNR to call me -- no response. I have tried calling the DNR, but their phone # is "no longer in service." I emailed coralations -- no answer. Any ideas?

I guess I'll just go to Zoni beach at night and wait?

Not at night, if you want to see them hatching. Early, early, early in the morning.

Happy Diving!

Debbie - for some of us that's still night ("8 AM? - means nothing to me")

but yeah I've heard 3 - 6 is more prime. I'd really like to hear a positive response as this is something I've always been curious about.

Actually, April is egg laying time; the hatch is late May-early July, as I recall.

Thanks for the tips!
Doug, I think I saw somewhere that someone has posted pictures of baby sea turtle that they saw during their visit to the island first week of April last year... can't recall where I saw it though.
Anyway, I think best way is to ask the locals when I'm there, right?

Hola! The owners of Palmetto Guesthouse, Mark and Terrie Hayward had guests that saw a female leatherback turtle laying eggs on Zoni beach. Check out the Archives Section, June 2008 of their website to view the awesome pics:
