Shade & Bugs at Flamenco
Culebra, Puerto Rico

My family and I are going to PR and we want to go to Culebra for a day visit. We want to check out Flamenco but I was curious if we need to being our own shade. We have a 10x10 canopy that we can bring but with airlines charging for luggage, we didn't know if it was worth it/necessary. We're going to have 3 kids in the group but we're taking the ferry over from Fajardo (and catching it back) so we're not going to be there ALL day. Is rental a realistic option? Also, since we're not camping and we have to leave before sunset to catch the ferry, do we need to worry about bug spray? What about on the mainland (Puerto Rico that is) in general? Thanks for all the help.

Tai

There are a few hollows in the seagrapes where you can find good shade. If you are there on a weekday, you should be able to find one to use. Bugs usually don't bite until dusk, especially on the breezier beaches.

I always get eaten up by sand flies at Flamenco. Best to have the bug spray!

Happy Diving!

We rented beach umbrellas that were available from a vendor on Flamenco when we were there in Jan.:

Also, there are a number of covered picnic tables/shelters just off the beach:

We didn't have any problems with sand flies during the day.

Enjoy your trip, alashas http://honeymoon2.smugmug.com/
