Jan 09 Visit
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hello,

Thank you all for the wonderful information - I browse the forums regularly. We will visiting PR, Culebra and Vieques for the first time in Jan. There are a few things I'm still unsure about and was hoping some of you could help:

1) We will be camping, three of us traveling (two tents). Is the $20/night rate per camp site or per tent? Can we pitch both tents on one site?

2) We would like to get to Vieques from Culebra without having to go back to the main island. Are there private water taxi options or something we can pursue for transportation?

3) Is there anything we should know about the weather, site seeing or any other details for this time of year that might be unexpected?

Much appreciate all the help.

$20 per tent unless you're 60+. Both tents can be on one site.

Climate (and water temperature) is almost identical year round. January is a great time to go. There are some holidays in January, such as Jan 6 (Epiphany) and Jan 19 (MLK). If you can avoid those and the attached weekends, all the better. But if not, it's still a nice time to go.

Ask for Section E. Trust me. (Do a forum search for Section E for a lot more info.)

Awesome! Thank you so much for the info. I will search for mor info on Section E. We will be traveling the 6th - 16th. We will be on Culebra 8th - 11th. Do you forsee this being a problem? Do you think a lot of places will be closed?

That is a great time to go. My family camped this year around those same dates (8th through 19th). Nothing was closed, except for maybe a couple of tourist-type shops.

I suggest you consider spending more time on Culebra, though. Two nights of camping just aren't enough to relax into the experience, in my opinion.

Camping at Flamenco is a special thing. I don't know if there is any other place on earth where you can camp at a gorgeous beach yet have all the conveniences offered by Culebra.

Thank you again Mort. You've made quite the pitch, maybe we'll have to rearrange our itinerary. Although we really are interested in seeing Vieques (bio-luminescent bay) and the rainforest (a lot to see in just 9 days).

Do you have the answer to my second question or does anyone else? "We would like to get to Vieques from Culebra without having to go back to the main island. Are there private water taxi options or something we can pursue for transportation?"

Hola! Unfortunately, there isn't a ferry from Culebra to Vieques or the other way around. You could however fly from Culebra to Vieques. Air Flamenco does have these flights, I don't know what is the rates are in January, you might want to call them and find out, 787- 724-1818.

Taking the ferry back to Fajardo and then to Vieques will save you $$, it's only $2.25 each way. Nice ride and nice picture options.
Happy travels! J

Most people on this board who are familiar with both islands prefer Culebra. Personally, I don't feel it's worth all the time and effort to go to and from Vieques when you're already planning to visit Culebra.

The rainforest and Culebra should fill up your vacation nicely. If you spend a week at Flamenco, you won't regret it.

Mort, you are being a little disingenuous.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chupacabra

the name is a phonetic corruption of "mysterious Culebra"

the last official report was at least 16 years ago.

Richard, you are one of a kind! And I mean that with great admiration and affection. And just a wee bit of concern.

We love Culebra and Vieques equally and for different reasons. Culebra for its' more laid back feel and Vieques for its' Biobay and free ranging horses running everywhere. This is just a couple of reasons. If I were not so tired, I would think of more! We spent 2 weeks on the big island in 2006 and came to Vieques for 2 nights of the 2 weeks and enjoyed the beaches and Biobay. We also took a power cat to Culebra and snorkeled a couple of places including Culebrita. This year we came for 1 week on Culebra followed by another week on Vieques. Our first trip we stayed at Loquillo and went into the rainforest and Old San Juan. Culebra vs Vieques is a matter or preference IMO.
