Nov 25 - 30th visit
Culebra, Puerto Rico

We are planning on camping the entire time and one website said that this was not the busy season and we would likely not need a campsite reservation, any local thoughts on the matter? Also, I just have a Wyoming DL card, will this be enough identification to get me to the island and back? And one more Q, I fly fish and so does my boyfriend, do they sell flies for local fishing and can we do this from shore or a kayak? What is the recomended AFTmA or line weight? Mine is currently set up with 5 pound line for mountain trout...

Thanks in advance,

Jilaena

Thanksgiving not the busy season?

True, Sept-Nov isn't the busy season, but on holidays all bets are off.

It's all relative, I suppose, because Culebra is not Times Square. But holiday weeks are the busiest weeks in Culebra just like any other place in the world.

If you are camping, go down all the way to Section E. You'll be arriving at a fairly crowded time, but you WILL get a place to pitch your tent. Rarely (if ever) is anyone turned away. They can fit a LOT of tents at Flamenco! Be prepared for a noise and even some rowdiness on Thurs through Sat nights. As I always say, bring earplugs and a sense of humor. The campground can be a festive place during holidays!

Your driver's license is fine. Going to Puerto Rico is exactly like going to one of the 50 states. No customs.

oh, but a Wyoming DL...

kidding, but for all others with questions:

http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_3256.html

if you want to island hop out of PR yes you will need one. but even domestic travel is always easier with a passport as it trumps a DL. currently you're fine (was iffy there a few years back). and for godssake's - E-Ticket! buncha idiot 13 year olds with no idea flying out of SJ fumbling for god-knows-what in front of you at check-in.

hrumph (end rant)

Ya, I always check in at the Kiosk, or that ATM looking machine. I never check baggage either. The airport section of my trip - which will take up two full days - I am not looking forward to.

So, I am backpacking it... I can just leave my stuff in my tent? Is there lockers or anything? Somwhere I could leave a nice camera while snorkeling?

Thanks again in advance

No lockers. Everyone leaves stuff in their tent or takes it with them.

There are VERY few thefts or incidents at Flamenco. Far less than most areas of the world. But it does happen.

Don't bother, by the way, to try to get camping reservations. Not only is it nearly impossible to reach someone, but reservations are meaningless. There are no numbered sites per se, so there is no way for them to hold a "site" for you. It's first come, first served.

You're arriving a couple days before Thanksgiving Day, which helps. But there will be a lot of locals from the main island who are taking that week off just like you are. But more of them are assigned to sections A through C. E is where they try to put the folks from the states. Be sure to ask for E. Trust me on that.

And even though it MAY be kind of crowded, it's still one of the most beautiful places on earth.

For snorkeling, definitely hike over to the Carlos Rosario & Tamarindo areas. (Search the forum for more info.)

nice camera? I hope it's digital - I ruined a 35mm analog on Flamenco once due to the fine sand (powder really) I even kept it in a ziplock unless using it.

still want to take it to a shop to find what's on it.

never camped there, but never heard worries unless it was an extra boisterous holiday.

Richard, looks like they'll be there during Thanksgiving. Definitely a holiday week!

Thefts are very rare, but all it takes is one person to steal something. If you leave something valuable in your tent, put it way in the back under a lot of stuff.

The only thefts I've personally heard about (maybe two?) were when someone left something on a picnic table or chair.

Most likely I will have my camera with me. It isn't extremely valuable, the pics will be though no doubt. It is digital, and has thus far handled many a backpacking trip through mountains. I will keep in my the fine sand issue though thanks,

Well it is looking like snow here in Wyoming, so I am anxious to get to paradise island... Anyone know about Bonefishing? We read this is the season and my boyfriend will be tyeing some flies for the trip today, are their any self proclaimed experts on the matter? Are they good eating? If we are camped at Flamenco can we cook on a grill their somwhere?

Mort, Richard, what do you guys do in Culebra besides answer all theses tourist questions from the mainland?

J

It's still amazingly quiet around here. More people yes, but nothing like you would expect. It's a good time to come down - everthing is open and no waiting for anything...(of course, this person has arrived now, so I'm just babbling into the ethos...as usual ;)
