Day Trip?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Thank you all for sharing your experiences and helping me to plan mine!

In December, I will be getting married/honeymooning in PR (Wyndham Rio Mar Hotel). When I first looked at travel guides, I thought Culebra would be a nice day trip. I figured we would take the ferry from Fajardo and then rent scooters.

As I read these forum entires, however, I notice that most visitors take about a four-day long trip. Also, I learned that the roads may not be in the best condition and that renting a Jeep would make better sense.

Can you please share your thoughts about a day trip to Culebra? Is it even worth it to go for such a short period of time (especially considering a 5:30 sunset in December)? Or should we try other islands like Mona or Vieques?

We aren't looking for any major excursions---just driving around to take in the sights and stopping at a beach or two. Oh, and some local comida, too!

I personally don't think it's worth it. The ferry takes 3 hours round trip. Add to that a 30-60 minute wait for the ferry at each end (you are wise to arrive at least that much ahead), plus getting to and from Fajardo, and you're talking a minimum of 6 or more hours just for transportation between the islands. Which leaves you not much time to explore Culebra.

It would be an awful hectic day considering that people go to Culebra to slow things down and relax.

Culebra isn't a beautiful island to "scooter through". Its beaches are what it's all about.

If you decide to make a day trip, just take the publicos to Flamenco and after you've had a nice time there, walk over the hill to Carlos Rosario to snorkel.

It's do-able, but why would you want to? Culebra is too beautiful to see in one day. If you must, you'll be catching the 9am ferry to Culebra (arriving around 10:30), and you'll need to be back at the ferry dock by 3:30 or 4 to catch the last ferry out (5pm), so it's not really a day trip - it's 5-6 hours tops. By the time you get a jeep and return it, knock another hour off. If you really want to see what Culebra offers, plan on spending at least one night.

Vieques is a shorter ferry ride, but I don't know the schedule.

Mona? Did you research that much?

Happy Diving!
Debbie

Hola! Mona requires a couple of days. There is absolutely nothing on the island There is a structure in construction for public lodging purposes, it has not been completed and although the governor visited in the spring, it is not yet open to the public. You must travel to Lajas, southwest of PR and get in touch with tourist outfit/guide that will take you there. The trip to Mona is about 5-6 hours long and they only go when the currents are safe. It is a very ROUGH trip. The currents (resaca) these past weeks have been very strong but will be much calmer in December. Staying at Mona Island is tent camping only and you have to take everything with you including drinking water because there is none on the island. There are no showers or toilet facilities either, it is roughing it in all the sense of the word. It would require a 3 hour trip from Rio Grande to Lajas, possibly a stay the night before or day you come back. After enjoying the Wyndham, I don't think you'll want to rough it like that at Mona, LOL!!! Day tip to either Culebra or Vieques is doable but you'd be rushing, stay at least a night and enjoy. Happy travels! J

If I were on a honeymoon (and I plan not to be, but I have a great imagination!), I would just drive around PR. It's a very beautiful island out of the city (yes, the city is cool but there is another world of PR beyond it). You can get quite far in a day, either doing the se to sw coast, or ne to nw coast...the interior is also stunning.
Really, it doesn't matter, you can't go wrong for the beauty & wow factor. I suggest doing some research on PR and finding a couple of things that appeal to you (caves, botanical gardens, funky fishing villages, festivals, you have many choices, especially in December) and just head in that direction without a lot of time pressure on yourselves - if you get lost, there will be something neat to see until you find your way again..
The only thing worse than a bad sunburn on your honeymoon is being stressed out trying to do too much (hey, I ran hotels, I've seen both and it ain't pretty).

Come back to Culebra for an anniversary...stay a week and enjoy the pace.

And...congratulations!
