any reviews of Doll House stay?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

We are a family of 4 with two teenage girls who love nature and swimming. We have secured our flights to Culebra in early April of 2009 and we are now looking for a place to stay!

My wife says 3 things are necessary at a minimum:

A clean place to stay
No infestation of bugs (especially cochroaches)
At least one firm queen or full size bed.
Our girls can sleep on twins or a futon.

So we've missed reserving 2 good places already and are surprised at how fast they are being reserved. Our next choice looks like the Doll House or otherwise known ast Casa Azul. I've emailed the owner who is happy to rent it to us for a somewhat reduced rate if we put the deposit down now.

So can anyone comment about the cleanliness and location of the place? We know about the roosters and will deal with that, but are bugs a problem?
Thanks ever so much for your help with our planning.
Any suggestons of other places to stay within the 1000 per week price range would be appreciated! My wife loves tropical flowers and it would be lovely to find a place with a garden!

I can't help you out with having stayed there, but I was in the house before it was sold to the current owner. It is a nice, small, clean house. The kitchen and living area are one space and then the two bedrooms and bath are off of that area. It is nothing fancy, but it was clean. I remember the ceilings feeling a little low, maybe just in the bedrooms, but how much time do you spend in there anyway?? Sorry, can't speak for the firmness of the matresses. The front yard is nice and spacious, fenced in. There is a nice sized deck on the back with really pretty views, very peaceful. If you are worried about space, check into renting the studio that is attached to the side of the house at the same time. That could be a nice little getaway for you and your wife (or send the girls there).

As far as bugs go, there is always a chance you can have a problem with them. I wouldn't think you would be dealing with an infestation there, though. I know that property also rents through Vacation Planners, so you could call them also and voice your concerns, they are really helpful.

Good luck!

Sue

Hi Robert and Donna. I also plan my vacations about a year in advance. We leave on July 19 for Culebra followed by another week on Vieques. I had considered staying at the Doll House, as well. I read a negative review and decided not to stay there. For the life of me, I can not locate that review. I did a search on tripadvisor and this forum, as well. I can not remember what the poster said exactly, but they said it was not as was presented on the their site. I had contacted the owner about what was next to the house, as I saw what looked to be a large building with murals painted on it and he said it was another home. I seem to remember the review saying something about dogs right next to the house and barking all night. We chose to stay at Casa Del Sol. You might want to check it out. The owner has been a pleasure to deal with and the reviews are good. It is on a "hill" on its' own 6 acres and the views are stunning. It is a large house with 4 bedrooms. The rental rate will be based on how many are staying and how many bedrooms you will be using. Happy house hunting!!

This is Robert again. I emailed the current owner Jeremiah Thompson who said this about the house (below). If anyone has stayed at the Doll house since Jeremiah has owned it, please add to our conversation. Thanks!

"Yea I would say things have definitely changed. Before I purchased the
home [in late 2007] then it was not managed by a professional company. It was not nearly as clean as it is now. My good friend owns Culebra Vacation Rentals [Planners] and can vouch for the house as it is now. Since I purchased then it has become one of the cleanest vacation properties on the island. The beds were replaced. There is a grill and so on. And internet too. It is as advertised on my site. And I know there has been lots of repeat guests who have remarked how much they like the house. With all that said I cannot promise on noise. It is in a neighborhood which normally means it is quieter then other areas. I have never experienced loud noises at night but during the day then the island is known to play music and so on. If that is an issue then I would recommend finding something more remote."

The noise from the neighbors remains my only remaining concern! Any comments on that?

Regarding the noise, you are really not going to be able to avoid it since it is in a neighborhood. The houses are fairly close together in most neighborhoods, and you would need air conditioning for noise abatement. There are roosters, partiers, cars, etc. It is part of the Culebra experience. If you require absolute dead quiet, you are going to need to look for a place out on the east end of the island, or high up on one of the hills outside of the neighborhoods. Bring earplugs. Or make sure you have a/c. Or visit a different island. After a couple of nights, you just get used to it.

Happy Diving!

I've read that Ambien is effective because even if the noise wakes you up during the night, you won't remember it in the morning. 'Course, you also won't remember if/where you've been sleepwalking, but that's part of the adventure.
