Concern about Camping on Memorial Day Weekend
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hello!

I just spoke to someone we're renting a vehicle from during our 2 night stay on Culebra.

Is this true?

1. Vandalism of rental vehicles do occur on Culebra in the parking lot of Flamenco Beach? And ESPECIALLY over major holidays, such as Memorial Day weekend?

2. Theft may occur on the beach? So would our tents, sleeping bags, clothes, get stolen? We would of course, be taking our wallets, cameras, and other valuables with us at all times...

Anyway, I'm pretty concerned now because we were really looking forward to camping on Flamenco Bay, but it would SERIOUSLY suck if the chances of getting our stuff stolen and broken into was high because it's going to be a major holiday weekend.

Any advice? Thanks!

Lily, the more people, the more chances of stuff happening. I do not think you have to worry, but if leaving things in your car, make sure they are not visible and just exercise the kind of caution you would elsewhere!

Get a site far away from the parking and you will be left alone!

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael

Michael is absolutely right (as always). Considering how many people (and parties) are happening in the campground on a holiday weekend, there's a remarkably low rate of crime. In fact, crime is pretty near non-existent.

If you leave something valuable out on a picnic table right next to a walking path, there is a chance that someone might take it. But 95% of the time even leaving something out in the open is perfectly safe.

Tents aren't "broken into". No one goes in your tent and roots around for stuff. Yeah, I suppose it could happen, but the odds are enormously against it.

Let me put it this way. When we camped at Flamenco for ten days a few months ago, we decided not to bring our good camera because we were worried about security. But after witnessing how safe the campground was (including a holiday weekend), we are going to bring our good camera with us when we return in December.

Thanks so much for the info... I was SERIOUSLY worried after talking to the car rental guy.

I'm going to have my wallet and camera on me at all times, even underwater (have special casing!).. so the only thing I was worried about was having someone go through my tent and steal my sleeping bag and my tent!

The car rental guy made it sound like the mainland Puerto Ricans were very rowdy drunks who would vandalize rental cars and take all your stuff...

Does the ranger usually put the North Americans in a more quiet campsite anyway? This is what I've been reading... but over Memorial Day weekend, does it get so crowded, that people are placed everywhere anyway?

Also, what is the plumbing situation like at the camp right now? The car rental guy says it's pretty BAD! Thoughts? THanks again!

Can't speak to any current plumbing problems, but there are plenty of flush toilets.

North Americans are usually sent to section E (the very end of the campground). You should definitely ask for E and definitely avoid A through C. But even section E can be loud on weekends... but not nearly as loud as the others. Bring earplugs and a sense of humor.

If you can, try to arrive before Friday so that you have more choices about where to pitch your tent.

No one will steal clothes and sleeping bags, don't worry. But if you leave them near a trash can, they'll be gone within a hour, sometimes within minutes. There's a tradition of leaving stuff behind that others can make use of.

Do not take the Ferry that weekend!!!! Take an airplane!!! The ferry experience on long weekends are simply NOT good. And I have to say, the best time to experince Culebra is from monday to frida,y or normal weekends.

A bad day at the beach beats the hell out a good day at the job
