New member...A few questions...
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hey,

I just stumbled over this site, let alone, this forum about 30 minutes ago.

My story is, My name is Luis (Call me Louie). I'm a 19 year-old, living in Los Angeles, CA, and I honestly plan to move to Puerto Rico within' the next year or so.

This May I will be taking a trip out there, with some family mainly to observe, and really scope the place out. A lot of my family out there live in San German.

but I'm VERY interested in Culebra, I've read through various topics and it sounds like paradise.

But I was going to ask, is there any living communities out there? As far simple living, or environmentalists?

Just a question, I'm very involved with community out here in LA.

But yeah just curious, please respond with what you will!

Thank you.

Louie -

What do you mean by "living communities"?

Everyone seems alive to me!

Seriously, like Debbie asks, what is a living community? I googled it and couldn't really find anything.

Are you looking for some kind of commune?

Hey guys, thanks for the response.

Well, I'm apart of a group called Parea Community, and basically we aid the homeless in our area, and other counties, and try to raise awareness for the less just, especially here in California.

When I say community, I use it in terms of an "Organization" but we're non-profit, thats why we prefer community.

Thats why I asked if there are any environmentalists in Culebra, any type of "Save the Earth" function or anything of that sort. And what are the people living there like? Any Indigenous islanders or is it entirely American-ized there?

And I also wanted to add, is petty theft an issue out in Culebra??

Once again, thanks for your time.

Everyone and anyone who cares about Culebra is an environmentalist in some way, shape or form. There are many who wish to stop the ongoing development that changes the spirit and culture of the island. The most known conservation organization is http://coralations.org/. When you arrive, get to know the locals, and you'll quickly figure out where their hearts are and where you can help.

The residents are about 70% Culebrense and 30% ex-pat Americans. These are just my estimates - I could be wrong. You can read about Culebra's history at http://www.theculebracalendaronline.com/ - over on the left, scroll down and click on Island History under Culebra in the Press.

Petty theft is beginning to be a bigger issue than is used to be. Exercise the same caution you would in the States, and you'll be fine.

Happy Diving!

Well, I just deleted a whole bunch of my own opinion...thought it better to give the practical answer, to point you in the educated rather than the subjective direction.

I'd strongly suggest you get in touch with Mary Ann Lucking of Coralations. She would be able to give you the big picture. Here is the website for contact.

http://www.coralations.org/about_coralations/index.htm

Mary Ann is involved in far more than saving & expanding the coral reefs and hopefully can help steer you in the right direction where your talents can be most used.
