Air and water temperature is virtually the same year round. The difference in the average high temp for May versus Oct is.... 1 degree! (October is higher than May).

True, October is technically in the hurricane season. So there's always a possibility. But if one does come while you are there, what an adventure! Just hide out in the concrete monstrosities that Flamenco campground is building for the food kiosks. They put Hitler's bunkers to shame. LOL!

Crowds are always better in Sept and Oct than other times of the year in the northern hemisphere. It's a perfect time to go on a vacation. I myself plan to go in early December this year, but only because I have work commitments in Sept and Oct.

You have no worries about things being open. There is always enough flow of visitors and locals to keep businesses going, especially grocery stores and restaurants. (MJ... Correct me if I'm wrong!)
