May vs October?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I will be traveling to Culebra in October and I have previously only been to the island in May. Besides October being hurricane season what other difference will I see when traveling to Culebra pertaining to weather, crowds, things being open, etc?

Any info would be great, thanks!

Culebra has a reputation of being one of the safest anchorages in the region for boats (duh - boats - what else anchors) during a bad storm, mostly due to the reefs at the entrance of the harbor.

ask others, but it seems like the more extreme weather goes North or South of there for some reason. Not that it won't get drenched at a time like that, but given recent patterns I'd be more worried on Cuba, the DR, the coast around Honduras or Southern Florida.

if you're truly worried about being stranded for a day or two, get travel insurance, stock up and have a party.

Air and water temperature is virtually the same year round. The difference in the average high temp for May versus Oct is.... 1 degree! (October is higher than May).

True, October is technically in the hurricane season. So there's always a possibility. But if one does come while you are there, what an adventure! Just hide out in the concrete monstrosities that Flamenco campground is building for the food kiosks. They put Hitler's bunkers to shame. LOL!

Crowds are always better in Sept and Oct than other times of the year in the northern hemisphere. It's a perfect time to go on a vacation. I myself plan to go in early December this year, but only because I have work commitments in Sept and Oct.

You have no worries about things being open. There is always enough flow of visitors and locals to keep businesses going, especially grocery stores and restaurants. (MJ... Correct me if I'm wrong!)

This is what I told someone the other day about coming here in October. There are some places that will be closed...but less than in September. The possibility of a hurricane is always there, but you will be taken care of, in the worst case scenario. You'll have a hell of a story to tell and you can be of help. It's quiet...veddy veddy quiet, which, while none of us are making money at that time, is the reason we came to Culebra in the first place, so we enjoy it, even if we gripe a bit.The weather is starting to cool off a tiny bit after the serious heat of summer, but it's still beach time weather.
And that's what I think about October (poor questioner...they just wanted a "is it safe yes or no" answer, I'm sure, and Mort as well!).

Truth? People write here a lot asking about the weather, the this and the that. We can generalize, as those who live here or those who have visited often or have part time homes here, but the reality is, the unexpected isn't so unexpected for us (and nearby islands as well, believe me). Maybe that is what keeps us from needing extra added excitement in our lives...we really DON'T know what tomorrow will bring, be it the weather, the ferry, the planes, the markets, the gasoline, the water, the electric, the "stuff I HAVE to have" that might or might not be available.

I for one am just hoping the veggie guy doesn't slow down to every three weeks...or go on vacation altogether from Culebra until Season starts again. But...as we know well, he will or he won't and we'll be just fine...and really excited when he shows up again with *the little things that make a difference*.

Thanks for the info! I'm not worried about the weather, what is the point in worrying about it, you can't change it. I am just hoping that restaurants and grocery are open. I had an awesome time last year and hope to enjoy everything again!

No worries, we like to eat as well...groceries will be open for sure, and there will be some places to go out to eat. There is a sort of schedule of who closes and who stays open...I'll try to find out more as the time draws closer (that's WAY too far ahead for me now!).
And...great attitude on the weather! You'll be just fine.
