Passport Needed from Continental USA?

Hello, can anyone tell me if I need a passport to travel to PR? I am coming from Texas. I have read no that I don't and have heard yes I do.

You do not need a passport....ABSOLUTELY not...I have travelled to Culebra a few times......anyone heard differently?

not necessary, but makes it easier if you have one.

e-ticket (and no check-in) through SJ is more critical.
