mix between scuba and snorkeling??

I was looking for some ideas on how to construct my idea. What I want to do is create a thing that allows you to explore the water under the water. Not scuba but a contraption that you don't need a scuba tank for. I want a flotation decive at the surface of the water with air hoses attached to it. and then somehow have the hoses attached to you mouth. I will try to illustrate is as best as possible.

/\/\/\ = Water

X = flotation device

| = hose

O = person

I hope you can grasp what I am trying to tell you, I dont plan to go too far down, only roughly 20 feet or so. If you have any suggestions on what I could use or anything at all, please let me know. thanks for your time!

What you are describing is a hooka rig and is extremely dangerous in waters that you do not know extremely well. It neccesitates someone on the surface of the water to tend the equipment above water and that someone has to really know what the heck they are doing in case you get into trouble. It is not available in Culebra. The best way to hurt yourself and also the environment that you are trying to enjoy is to try something in a strange place without the proper equipment. I have the utmost respect for Culebra's medical staff but a medical emergency resulting from the use of this type of thing would have to be flown off island to a place even more foreign to you. Please be careful and enjoy your vacation and try other, easily accessible and enjoyable, safe ways to enjoy Culebra and it's waters. Mil gracias.

Teresa,

I did some research on the hooka rig. I found that it used a compressor. That is not what I am looking to do. I also found that you could go up to 100 feet deep. I simply want to go 20 feet deep.

I was wondering if a diving regulator required compressed air to be used. If not, then perhaps it would be possible to connect a hose to a regulator and have the hose @ the surface. I realized that it would be near impossible to simply put a tube in your mouth and go because when you blow out, not all of the air would go out and you would have simply carbon dioxide in your tube. So what I was hoping to do is keep a fresh supply of oxygen in the tube, and the the carbon dioxide simply go out the regulator.

Jeff,
I looked at the snuba thing and that sounds alright but I don't want to get into tanks and whatnot. Thanks for your suggestion however.

Thanks for your time.

p.s. if this dosen't make sence, say so and i will try to explain it better

Brent, I do not think you realize that you have to overcome the pressure under water .. which is IMPOSSIBLE with your lungs, even in 3 feet of water. You will need a pump, compressor or other device that drives the air down.
The only way you will keep your lungs inflated own your own is by holding your breath, which - depending on your breath retention - could give you up to 3 min under water. maybe enough to do some exploring!

Alright. Thanks for explaining it to me. I didn't understand that about air pressure and my lunds. I guess I just may have to take up scuba! Thanks again
