Just Returned From Culebra

I have visited Culebra in the past, but this is the first time, I spent 4 days, 3 nights, (Feb 11 - Feb 14). Just to give everyone an idea of how our trip went...I will provide you with the pertinent information.

Note: the view from Culebra Beach Villas (CBV) was spectacular. The sand was soft has flour and very light in color. The water was crystal clear and even swimable at night (temperature) and the view of the mountains just added to picturesque scenery of Flamenco Beach.

Accommodations: We stayed at CBV. The accommodations were better than expected, but of course, it depends on the unit. Our unit (2 bdrms, 1 bath, kitchen w/ appl, dining area, lvg rm and balcony facing the beach), did have televisions, but no satellite signal. (So, no TV). Warning, the road to the villas is unpaved, and full of holes and dips.

Food: We visited the Dingy Docks, the food and drinks were excellent, and the view was spectacular. We also visited Mamacitas, and was quite disappointed with their service and menu options, especially since they are highly advertised on the Culebra websites.

Warning, Mamacitas did run out of salad, and Churasco, which meant that 1/2 of the menu was not available. I was a little disappointed with the selections of food overall, some Spanish food, (Rice, beans and tostones), but that was it.

Transportation: We did rent a Jeep Liberty from Carlos's Jeep rental. The jeep was new with little miles and was useful when driving on the road to the villas. We did tour parts of the island in the jeep. If you are not used to driving a jeep, it takes a bit of getting used to. If you are staying at Culebra

Grocery Stores: Note, some stores begin closing at 5 pm, and the latest I believe was 7pm. So it you need to purchase anything from ice, to soda, etc, get it on time.

Insects: We didn't have much of an insect problem, but did get bitten while sitting on the patio tables at Culebra Beach Villas......Take spray, just in case.

Cellphone Service: every so often we were able to get reception and make a phone call.

Overall, we will be returning next year.....Hope this helps...

It would be VERY helpful if you would include the unit number at CBV. Since the quality varies so widely, knowing which ones are good would be a service to all who want to stay there. Informed potential customers might also encourage the owners to make sure that their units are up to snuff.

mamacitas is very hit or miss - something anglo-s just don't appreciate.

Last ime there, we had a terrific waitress one evening and we tipped her well, as we try to do. Next evening, we had a young girl, who could not care less and gave really lousy service. Bad enough to make me pretty angry, whcih is not common. On top of that, she automatically added a hefty tip on the bill -- I think 18% - and it certainly was not deserved. Some of the worst service I have received on island. She was too busy talking to fellow workers, usually male. Openly avoided our table even when we flagged her. part of her probelm seemd to be that she undertood almost no English, thus avoided contact with customers. (The terrific waitress was obvioulsy a transplant from north america - no language barrier and obvious work ethic) I can undertadn this to a degree and I have learned enough Spanish to get by in this situation - but never had the chance. Of course, restaurants have trouble getting good help, but the automatic gratuity was obviously not "policy" and ending up creating a very bad impression.

I just got back from culebra too. We aaccidently double-tipped the first time we were at Mamacita's, not realizing they always add 15%. We noticed it next time we went-- says it on the menu-- as policy. Of course it detracts from the incentive-based system that is tipping, and will likely lower the quality of service. But it is on the menu.

Hi, Wanted to thank everyone for all the helpful information regarding visiting Culebra. We just got back after spending 7 days there with 3 children ages 9, 7, & 5. We stayed at Casa Espada and had an absolutely incredible time. Teresa Perez, the owner of the property couldn't have been more helpful or hospitable. She went out of her way to help me plan my trip. The property was very clean and comfortable. The kids loved the roosters and chickens, finding coconuts and almonds. It trully is a a magical place. Although our spanish speaks skills were extremely limited, the locals were so kind to us if we attempted to speak the language. Of note, we tried to occasionally bring an extra trash bag on our travel to pick up a few pieces of litter left behind by others at various beachs. Thought it would be nice to do our part to keep Culebra such a unique place to visit.
