Their conclusion is that the 'green - go' theory was actually predated by the word gringo; in other words, the term existed before the Mexican American conflict.

And, as with many other 'derogative' terms, the term 'gringo' can change meaning, depending by whom and how it is used. As can be seen in an adjoining thread.
