What's a Gringo?

Thought this might be of interest, from thefreedictionary.com:

"Word History: In Latin America the word gringo is an offensive term for a foreigner, particularly a North American or English person. But the word existed in Spanish before this particular sense came into being. In fact, gringo may be an alteration of the word griego, the Spanish development of Latin Graecus, "Greek." Griego first meant "Greek, Grecian," as an adjective and "Greek, Greek language," as a noun. The saying "It's Greek to me" exists in Spanish, as it does in English, and helps us understand why griego came to mean "unintelligible language" and perhaps, by further extension of this idea, "stranger, that is, one who speaks a foreign language." The altered form gringo lost touch with Greek but has the senses "unintelligible language," "foreigner, especially an English person," and in Latin America, "North American or Britisher." Its first recorded English use (1849) is in John Woodhouse Audubon's Western Journal: "We were hooted and shouted at as we passed through, and called 'Gringoes.'"

The gringo word is is not an offensive term for foreigners is just the way to call americans from united state. gringo means gri- come from green- go from the verb to go in the war between mexico and united states for texas the troops from u.s they use to call greengo to move up and the mexican since then any time they see somebody from u.s they ask if they are gringos or from other country that's all. is like for you americans are only people from u.s that not true from canada thru argentina everybody are an american because belongs to america , but in europe people call americans just the people from u.s because in the 1800's and 1900's most of the travelers us to be from u.s.thanks

Nene, please, read this article:

http://ask.yahoo.com/ask/20000821.html

and for a much longer, in depth explanation with dictionary references:

http://www.marrder.com/htw/jan97/editorial.htm

Their conclusion is that the 'green - go' theory was actually predated by the word gringo; in other words, the term existed before the Mexican American conflict.

And, as with many other 'derogative' terms, the term 'gringo' can change meaning, depending by whom and how it is used. As can be seen in an adjoining thread.

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael
