ferry
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Is there any reason why not to take the ferry to Culebra? I have read a couple
of times on the forum that people are not confident with the ferry. I thought we could rent a car, drive to the ferry and step on as passengers. Is flying Air Flamenco the best way or is the ferry doable?

The ferry at times may not be running on schedule or one may be down with no replacement. You also must be in line several hours prior to departure to purchase tickets. Also preference as far as tickets are concerned is given to the locals. With that being said, you can take your chances. My suggestion would be to fly over. The flights are a sure thing, normally leave on time and get you there much sooner. Just drive your vehicle to the airport at Ceiba and catch your flight, leaving your vehicle in the parking area at the airport. We always fly over and take the ferry back. We stay 2 weeks though. Have a great trip.

I wouldn't say the flight is a sure thing. Though I'm going back in Jan. and am flying to Culebra from Vieques and flying to Vieques from Ceiba.
Four years ago in April, I was flying from San Juan to Culebra and the weather was too windy to land on Culebra. We flew in circles for awhile, then were dropped off to wait in Vieques while the pilot did another flight. I can't remember if they tried again that night or if we were just stuck in the airport for a few hours. Then we had to make last minute arrangements on Vieques and they took us to Culebra in the morning.
I'm betting my flight was more of a rare incident then the ferry being overbooked. On the plus side, we got to go to the biobay which wasn't planned, but was great.

I love taking the ferry, we've done it five of six visits to Culebra. I like watching for whales (saw one), seabirds, and feeling the ocean swells. I like waiting at the cafe by the terminal in Fajardo, and by the dock in Dewey. The plane was much quicker, but not exciting. We paid $5 a day to store the car in Fajardo, and got to drive to Yunque and other places around the main island. There are risks of the ferry being full when you want to take it, just like there are weather-related risks with both ferry and plane. Don't plan a tight-scheduled trip, give yourself a night in a place on the main island before running to the airport. I recommend airbnb.
