Strict Airline Baggage Restrictions?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Flying out tomorrow! I know the baggage weight allowance is 30 lbs total per person. I would love to bring my snorkel gear but that puts me over the limit. Vieques Air says they charge for anything over 30 lbs but that if they don't have room for extra weight, the luggage will come on another flight.

How much do they charge for each lb over 30 lbs?

Is it common to have the luggage come on another flight?

This is a concern because on our way back we have a flight out immediately to Miami so if a bag is left behind, it won't make it with us to Miami and then we fly from Miami back to Portland, OR.

Trying to guage if we should risk the extra few lbs or try to get the weight under 30 lbs total. Please share your experience.

I would not risk it. We have had luggage left for a later flight. Luckily we had a few hours before our flight back to the continental US but we did spent a few anxious hours at Isla Grande waiting.

60 cents a lb for over 30. We had to leave all our dive equipment overnight at Isla Grande as we were the last flight of the day and the flight was full. We spent a restless night, but it was there the next am with no problem. I would not chance it on the flight back. Just rent snorkle equipment on the island and help out the economy.

So, they are very strict? I understand for safety reasons but would they make is leave a bag behind if we are 5 lbs over? Just trying to guage how often this happens.

My bag alone weighs 4 lbs so that leaves only 26 lbs for clothing, books and toiletries for a 10 day trip.

Thanks so much!

26 pounds is more than you need....you don't need toiletries or clothing....take a Nook or Kindle....problem solved.

I couldn't resist.

Peace out

Herb, with your advise, I will just let everyone know I will be the dirty naked lady sitting on the beach reading a kindle that I lifted off some poor unsuspecting soul since I don't own one. So then I would be a dirty naked thief reading a kindle on the beach. ;-)

Seriously, we will be in the Everglades and in Miami for part of this trip and going out for a nice dinner as well so need something other than a swim suit and a sarong.

I traveled for 2 1/2 months in Peru and Ecuador with one carry on but it weighed more than 30 lbs.

I would still like to know if they are likely to make us leave something behind if we are 5 lbs over. Has anyone had to leave a bag behind for being 5 over?

Thanks again!

I will also add stinky from lack of deodorant and teeth brushing, sunburned from lack of sun screen and mosquito bitten from lack of repellent.

This is not painting a pretty picture of me! Lol!

I am no prima donna and can do without makeup, frilly outfits and fancy shoes but some things I just have a hard time traveling without. I was a flight attendant for years and I am an avid traveler so I will unpack and repack as I am sure there are a few things I can do without.

If worse comes to worse I can always mail something home from Culebra, right?

The problem is that the answer to your question is, "It depends." It depends on things which are beyond your control and unpredictable. We have made about 8 trips back and forth and only had our luggage delayed on one trip. It was delayed because there was another family booked on the flight, a large family (in all senses of the word) and they were travelling with large suitcases. So, no one's luggage got on the flight. For the other trips there have been no problems.

And, you don't need a Kindle or Nook nor to pack books because there is a very nice public library from which you can borrow books at no cost (however, they do depend on contributions from the borrowers to keep the library going).

A final thought, could you mail home from Culebra some of your things to keep the weight down? I know cost isn't the issue but we have found the cost of mail to be less than the charge for overweight.

Good morning,
It's not the 4-5 pounds that you are possibly over, but the cumulative weight for the plane.

VAL now charges $1.00 per pound over 30 lbs.

It is quite possible, as flights are often full, that things could get left behind-not likely, but possible.

You could also bring just a mask. Or, if you want to bring your snorkel gear, you can always mail it home to yourself. Our post office is excellent & flat rate priority boxes work very well.

Best,
Terrie

What Terrie said. I do it every time I come. I need my own mask 'cuz it has my prescription. I prefer my own tube 'cuz it only has my cooties on it. Owing to the fact that I married the lead character from "The Princess and the Pea", we also have to mail her mattress topper when she comes. Most of the accomodations I have patronized just have me mail it to them, but you can mail it to yourself, General Delivery.

We were in pretty much the same pickle for our return trip home, so we opted for mailing our luggage back. We mailed one suitcase and one duffel bag. The suit case with fixed dimensions was relatively economical. On the other hand, the duffel bag was "loosely" measured by the post office and cost a small fortune. The take home message is use a shipping container, ie box, with firm dimensions and you will find it very affordable to mail to Culebra.

Peace out
Herb

I always ship my gold doubloos in the USPS flat rate boxes. Be sure to get a tracking number and it'll show up. If you insure it, it will show up not all smashed up. And remember to bring the tracking slip down with you. Sometimes those boxes sit in a pile in the back of the post office.

We are sending 2 boxes down to insure that we can use carry on without checking any bags.

As far as coming back, what are the post office hours and days open?

USPS hours are the same as in the states. Don't forget to get a tracking number.

Except, Geronimo, there are many more holidays in PR, and thus the post office is closed more often than in the mainland States.

Happy Diving!
Debbie
