Taxi to Fajardo (midnight)
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hello! We are arriving around midnight on Wednesday February 16th and hoping to catch the 9am ferry in Fajardo.
1.) Will a taxi take us from the airport at midnight or later to docks?
2.) Would it be adviseable to simply rent a one-way vehicle and drive there ourselves (sleeping in the car until the ferry arrives)?
3.) Or might it be best to arrange private driver transport sometime in the early morning and just bum around the airport until then?

We really need help with this since we have never done and aren't sure which of those three will actually work. Anything and everything is appreciated!

1) yes
2) no. rental agencies are closed that late at night and if the agency in Fajardo doesn't open till 8 am (where you will need to return the car), then you risk losing your window to return the car, buy tickets and board the ferry
3) definitely an option

Happy Diving!

Not sure I would want to take a taxi from SJU after midnight and spend the rest of the night hanging around the ferry docks waiting to start the ticket line. While you would probably be able to be the first in line, I think I'd vote for option 3. John's Publico can get you to Fajardo in plenty of time for the first ferry.

I agree the car rental option probably won't work due to your late arrival. The morning Fajardo part can work if you have more than one person. One or more can get in line to buy tickets while the other(s) can return the car and get a ride back to the ferry docks. We pulled it off easily last year.

Why not go with 1. and take the freight ferry that goes at 4am? You'll get to Culebra by 6am when the bakery at the ferry dock is open and also the one up the street 1/2 a block. Carlos and Jerry won't be open at that time but you sure can be their first customer. AND, you'll have the morning on Culebra not at the ferry dock in Fajardo.

I was under the impression that the 4am ferry no longer ran - is it still going? That would be a great solution - is the ferry ticket window open for the 4am ferry? I think that is a really good option - anything that gets us on the island for longer is a good call in my mind. Do you suggest a taxi to the Fajardo at the 4am ferry, or try to get a driver at that late hour? Thank you for all your help!

Donna is talking about the cargo ferry (the one that take vehicles over). It will also take passengers and it does leave at 4AM. The trip takes a little longer. It sounds like this might be a great solution for you. Have a great trip. We leave June 18 for 2 weeks.

There is freight/cargo ferry that leaves Fajardo at 4am, Mon. - Fri. Under stand it would be best to get there between 3 - 3:30 and I'm sure someone will take your money! Prearranging for a taxi would probably best but there are always some at the airport and they would probably prefer the fare to Fajardo than around the corner to a hotel in Condado or Isle Verde.

Excellent! I will be on the 4am ferry! Or so I think, the question has now become, how to purchase tickets for this 4am ferry if the ticket window is not open at that hour. I have read stories of trying to reserve or contact them - and I just want to make sure I have a way to buy a ticket when I arrive in the middle of the night. Will they take my money directly on the boat? How does that all work, has anyone tried to hop on this cargo ferry before?

Question #2 - how do we pre-arrange a taxi/driver and price to get us there from the airport around midnight? Is there a reliable number/person who will make this late night run? What will it likely cost us?

Thank you all for all your help - couldn't be more appreciated, medalla's on me if we meet!

I am pretty sure that the ferry ticket window will be open to sell you ferry tickets around 3:00am.

When you exit the SJU airport there is a "taxi stand" right out by the curb. Tell the guy you want to go to Fajardo ferry and he gives you a piece of paper with the destination and fare on it. You then hand that to the cabby lined up curbside. It's ~$80 for the ride. Drive is ~1hr. The carga ferry will be busy loading trucks at that time. Boat ride ~1.5hr to Culebra unless you are traveling with Capt Wacky. LOL. The crowing roosters will greet you once ashore.

Or you can use the phone numbers on this website (transport-getting there-get to Fajardo) to contact John's Publico or Henry, and they can be waiting for you for about the same price.
