Two 21-yr olds visiting PR

Hi -

New poster here grateful for the wealth of knowledge on this forum. I am travelling to PR with my girlfriend at the end of January for 6 nights (flying in and out of San Juan).

We will have 4 nights which we hope to spend on Culebra and/or Vieques. We are hoping to see beautiful scenery in a romantic setting but can't decide if we have enough time to visit both islands (potentially for 2 nights each?). We would be willing to spend $75 each round trip to travel between the islands, but it seems like the only options are prohibitively expensive (chartering a plane 600 rt for 2-8 people) or prohibitively long and stressful (taking 2 subsequent ferries to fajardo).

Culebra sounds amazing but while we dont need a crazy nightlife, we wonder if the lack of restaurants and night activities would make 4 nights perhaps too long. On the other hand, Vieques seems like it has more going on because its a bigger island (perhaps better for our age), but we dont want to come so close to Culebra and not visit! I emphasize that we are not looking for a "spring break" location of course, just that I wonder if culebra would be a bit boring in the evenings (we'll be on a sleep schedule of waking around 8am, but going to bed at midnight!)

Finally--been taken aback by what seems like an anti-Vieques campaign (viequesno.com). Cant understand the motivation behind the website but still taken aback at the numerous horror stories.

Any advice would be much appreciated, especially if my impressions of each island and the feasibility of visiting both over 4 days are inaccurate!

All best and thanks so much!

I would not try both on such a short venture. You'll spend a LOT of time traveling and getting delayed and frustrated. If you go to Vieques, we like Espiranza. Lots of nice beaches up the coast that you have to drive to. Culebra is smaller and compact. If you hit it over the weekend their is some nightlife. Else, get up with the sun and rage all day and you will not make it to midnight. Either way, you can't go wrong. Enjoy.

We were there 2 years ago and leaving in 10 days to go back. The first trip we thought 2 days on each would be fine but once we hit the islands, we fell in love and cancelled the rest of our itinerary so we could spend more time on both.

My opinion, pick one. RT from Isle Grande for @ 150 each. Which to choose? Tough one.

Culebra...Probably my favorite. The beaches and snorkeling were amazing. There for 4 days and only saw half the beaches. Food was good. Enough variety you don't have to eat at the same place twice unless you want to. Mamacita's menu changed nightly and thats where we were staying so we ate there often. Plus, always plenty of friendly locals and tourists to hang out with. Sorry, but no matter what the age, there is to much to do to get bored. Great fun and memories!(like Chicka Dee!! Hope he is still around!! LOL)

Vieques...Hard to beat. The bio bay is one of the most amazing things you will ever see. I would repeat almost everything I said above. The only drawback was we didn't have transportation in Vieques because you have to reserve way in advance. So, we got to see basically Esperanza and the surrounding beaches and a taxi to MP. Still filled four days with great memories (like the crazy lady that got us lost on the way to the airport.

Flip a coin...You'll LOVE either...Just don't waste the precious time on the Ferry!

Geronimo and Darrin, thank you so much for your thoughtful advice. We have decided to stay in Vieques for the 4 days despite novieques.com's warnings. Still unsure why there is a website dedicated to deterring tourism in Vieques, but we are optimistic it will be a wonderful vacation. We will definitely have to come back the next time for culebra!

I have been to the Islands and they are beautiful! Before you go you should do some research which can be easily done on the internet with it's vast information. I have been using the Google TV through the Logitech Revue for all my trip prep and it's been so useful! I work at Dish Network so I have version they offer but it's the best out there if you ask me and I DO MY research! If you go on forums you can get a lot of personalized information you probably would not get just by going to main stream websites. I always look for any information I can find that comes from a local or can put me in touch with someone who is local therefore I get the goods about the topic I'm researching. In fact I'm sitting here in my recliner right now researching my next trip to the Bahamas on my big screen while watching a Nat Geo Survivorman in case I get lost. Good Luck!

Love to hit the road when I can utilize my trips as a tool for sucking up as much knowledge is as feasibly possible for one mind.
